Arcade hike due to ‘currency fluctuations’

Arcade hike due to ‘currency fluctuations’

Xbox Europe chief Chris Lewis says that troubled Pound was behind £30 price increase

Alongside this morning’s confirmation that the Xbox 360 Elite is dropping by £30, Microsoft has also confirmed a £30 price rise for the Arcade SKU – a decision brought about by the fluctuating value of sterling, according to Chris Lewis, European VP of the firm's interactive entertainment business.

“We are making modest increases on the Xbox 360 Arcade console as you can see,” Lewis told MCV. “The reality now is partly to offset currency exchange rate fluctuations which have impacted us in local market conditions – particularly in the UK.

“And you've seen other consumer products operate in the same way. But I think even with that we still offer the most affordable console in the marketplace out there.

“So we've reset the price point largely based on exchange rate fluctuations, but are still very happy we offer great value through the Xbox 360 Arcade.”

The price of the Xbox 360 Arcade in North America remains unchanged.

same for the accessories eh ? same reason activision increased all world of war craft games and pre paid cards ? so europe once again gets skrewd, i wonder if your trying to claw back some money from all the repairs you had to pay for over the last few years, im not complaining about the fail rate, as we sold so many more core consoles as people couldnt wait for their repair to come back,

As the UK pound has been quite stable now for the past 2 months, i see it as an excuse for a price hike

I can't believe that they've done this really, theres now £40 difference between a very bare console and one with a 120gb hard drive and a headset which would cost a lot more than £40 if you bought them separately. I can't see Microsoft selling many of these at this price.

truth be told, we dont even buy arcades from gem anymore as they make you buy a crap game with it, we get ours from online with 2 games we can actually sell seperatly, and we are not buying halo ODST from gem since Amazon are cheaper, we get free delivery and get it early so we can sell it early, we have to find the best deals and its not always with suppliers, we certainly dont use kotch for nintendo products

What kind of price drop makes it more expensive not just to buy the Arcade, but also to buy a 360 with a hard disk? Once the Pro units are gone it will be more expensive, and you have to get your cables seperately too.

It's not just in the UK either, the Arcade has gone up in price elsewhere in Europe too.

This isn't the type of stunt you want to be pulling just as your most direct competitor is waking up after 3 years.

Hopefully now Microsoft are excluding the HDMI cable from the Elite, it will stop XBox fanboi's chanting "No HDMI cable with PS3!!" etc.

Erm.. the PS3 was overpriced. That is why they can afford a cut. Everyone knows that, that is why everyone has been calling for a bloody cut the last year or so.

I wanted to go to store and buy xbox Arcade for £99, because this would be the right price for me. But with increase to £159 I guess I will wait 2 more years. :-)

Not really. Bigger hardware costs compared to the 360.

As others have said the Pound has been stable for a couple of months now. It's the first part of a phase out of the Arcade console. It has a dwindling attractiveness to the consumer and MS realise the Elite is the way forward.

Laugh of the year

I can see the PS3 Slim dropping to £199 as we're now going to see the biggest price war in gaming history. I think the PS3 will crush the 360 as Sony will just keep hitting Microsoft with price drops. But the PS3 Slim at £249 isn't much of a price drop. I'm onto my 6th 360 so I've had enough of Microsoft. As for the Arcade going up in price by £30, that's joke of the year. Who'd want to pay £159 for a console with no hard drive. The Arcade should be £99 by now. But saying that, who'd want a 360 anyway as it's been knocked together by monkeys.
