Microsoft: Hardware problems a thing of the past

Xbox 360 boss Aaron Greenberg claims console errors are “well behind us”

A Microsoft exec has claimed the Xbox 360’s notorious hardware problems can now be considered a thing of the past.

Xbox 360 production boss Aaron Greenberg told Gamespot the Microsoft’s production advancements have made the console much more stable. Owners should be less likely to suffer from the E74 error and the Red Ring of Death.

“We’ve been working hard to make improvements in the product we’re currently making, so I really feel like most of this is well behind us,” he said. “I can tell you the consoles we’re making today have lower-heat chips and better cooling, and we’re seeing fantastic quality in those consoles today.

“That said, I know people have had issues with systems which were bought earlier in the lifecycle and that’s part of the reason why we implemented our unprecedented three-year warranty for anyone who gets the three red-ring flashing light error or the E74 error.”

so nobody ever has had a 3-year warranty?
we do need more accurate figures before we can go bitching about this cos the recent mag survey that sparked all this BS is not 100% reliable, although indicative.
a lot of posts i read about that from consumers said things like "if i take all the friends i know with Xboxs and how many units they've had altogether that the failure rate is over 100%" but still, who TF are they?

I don't think Xbox will ever shake off the reliablilty stigma with the 360, it's part of it's history. they're still doing pretty well tho even with faulty products so they must be doing something right!

i would maintain however that the PS3 is bullet-proof in comparisson.

i dont like this guy is seems very smarmy and arrogant, he should come and work in a games store for a few weeks, and see how many 360s we book in for repair and how many times we give out microsofts number for faulty consoles, sorry it may not be as bad as before, but the problem is far from behind you, but it just sells more consoles as alot of customer cant wait to for the repair so we sell used consoles or the arcade pack

Well Microsoft congratuations. 4 years on, a 54% current faulty rate and a software update to change the name of the RROD its glad to finally see you have overcome this hurdle.
It seems you finally have a functioning console.
But with this unprecedented news i feel i may stick with my PS3

Hmmm... the new faulty Xbox360's sat in my returns pile at work tell a different story. They might not all have rrod, but they have disk read errors, disk scratching faults, glitchy graphics etc.

we havent had any problems with 360's for around about a year now, faulty returns on them have been very minimal, maybe everyone else is getting really old ones or second hand ones

Any of you lot ever trace the serial number because if you dont then you may just realise that half of your customer base is robbing you money by returning you there old 360's that they had from before

I have noticed though lately that a lot of PS3's are coming back with HDMI problems, anyone else had this? There have been a few with pixels missing from the HDMI (and no it's not the TV or the HDMI cable)

No... I have at least 7 or 8 2009 manufactured Arcades faulty from the last 2 to 3 weeks . Have not seen any PS3's with the fault you mention. Not that "Pixels missing from the HDMI actually makes any sense" I suspect you may be talking cack my friend.

Currently I'm on my 3rd Xbox Pro (both have been replaced) and 2nd Xbox Elite (they repaired the MBX) - albeit they've all been first generation I will always consider my my xbox as the console that's guaranteed to break down. I've also had to send my brothers Xbox back and the girlfriends brothers Xbox (both of which have only been bought in the last year.

Now in response to Hmmm. I'm actually on my 3rd PS3 also. Each time it's just been HDMI problems. First time I was getting an issue where the screen was just flickering! They replaced that with a refurb which didn't work from the start. Just woudln't connect HDMI. And now my 3rd one at times won't connect to HDMI - have to hold down power button enable standard connection. When it displays it'll say that it detects that there's a HDMI connection and do you want to use that now - if you select yes it just doesn't display and you have to restart PS3. So from my experience PS3 does have issues with HDMI but Xbox RROD is just ridiculous! And I have heard things like this from MS before. When they released the Elite they said that RROD wouldn't be possible! Infact they said it was Bulletproof! I wonder what happened to my one then!

we have had some faulty ps3s but they tend to be 2 years old,
mainly hard drive failure which we ca upgrade and fix,
the embarrasing thing is i was selling a 360 and a women pushed to the front of the till and started complaining about her elite having 3 red lights after just 2 weeks bought from us brand new, i dont mind, but it doenst give the new customer much confidence in the hardware

I agree with the guy who said 'ask all your friends if they had problems with their 360's'....

Microsoft like to make crap and then pretend it's not there problem. Simple as really. I know about 7 or 8 people whose Xbox's have simple died.

TBH this is the besy way to see how many Xboxs have bought it.

all my friends with Xboxs have needed new ones. in fact, i'm the only person i know who hasn't needed a replacement. i might point out that i traded mine in because i had a very horrible feeling that it was about to implode. kinda feel sorry for the poor sod who bought that one second hand. but then i feel if you opt to buy a second hand 360, you're kinda asking for it.

if ever my Xbox crashed, i'd fear the worst.
i've had a PS3 (BC so it's not a brand new one, 4xUSB, SD and CF slots, 60gb) for a couple of years now. it has crashed a few times but no way as much as my 360 did. even then when it crashes i don't lay a hot one in my y-fronts cos i know it'll start up again, which it always had.
the best thing i ever did for my PS3 was hoover the dust out. it deosn't get half as hot as it did before but it's better ventilated now it's been moved.

ok, so maybe i'm suckin off the PS3 a bit, but the headline on this artical is about as accurate as Sony saying "we've put the fact the voice chat function on the PS3 totally blows behind us"

It would be nice to know from the Microsoft exec exactly what these improvements have been. I guess we'll see, but there's still a whole lot of older systems out there that need fixing.

Why don't you just buy the book or CD Rom off ebay for about £1 and you can fix the red ring of death no need to send it off..!!! no need to wait 4 weeks to get it back and then you get the best gaming experience currently on the high street again :-)

I work in a games shop, and the number of customers we get coming in with busted 360s is as high as it ever was, and that includes the newer Jasper equipped models which Microsoft have been telling us will 'fix' the problems with the machine.

I certainly wish they would just fix it already, as it would make my job a hell of a lot easier.

After my 360 died on me 3 times in a year and a half, I laid my 360 to rest and got a ps3. Didn't see the point investing money in games for a console that played those games constantly brake down. Had the ps3 for a full year and not one problem. Like Tom said earlier, it's made headline news and it's tough to shake off a history of bad press.
