Sony: 3D TV ‘in every home’ next year

PlayStation 3 will be fully compatible with new technology, says electronics giant's boss Stringer

Sony has predicted that 3D TV will be ‘in every home’ by the end of 2010 – and that PlayStation 3 will become a key driver in for the technology.

Speaking at the at IFA technology trade show in Berlin, the electronics giant revealed that PS3 would be fully compatible with a range of 3D TVs it plans to roll out next year.

Industry insiders have told MCV that Sony has already overseen the internal development of 3D games – but are holding off from announcing them until an industry 3D standard has become apparent.

The Telegraph reports that Sir Howard Stringer, Sony’s chief executive (pictured), said 3D technology would be offered across the majority of its products.

He gave no indication of price – but analysts expect early 3D TVs to cost several thousand pounds.

"Today, 3D is clearly on its way to the mass market,” Mr Stringer was expected to tell a press conference, reports the paper.

"As with high definition a few years back, there are a variety of issues yet to be addressed.

“But the 3D train is on the track, and we at Sony are ready to drive it home."

It follows similar announcements earlier this year from other television manufacturers, including LG and Phillips.

British Sky Broadcasting has announced plans to launch its first 3D channel next year.

I seriously doubt this. Plenty of people I know don't even have HD yet, so a 3D tv in every home is unlikey. Sure, I'll be one of the early(ish) adopters who get stung by high prices that will inevitably fall just after I've bought one, but still, I can't see more than 5% of people I know shelling out tonnes of cash to replace their brand new HDTVs already, especially when so little content is 3d capable yet.

crazy crazy crazy. i'm 27, have seen loads of films played loads of games blah blah blah and i've never watched a film in 3D. not to say that i never will, however, having to buy a brand new TV (to replace my 18mnths old HD TV?!?!?!) to watch a new wave of 3D stuff just ain't gonna happen.

the only thing i can think of here that is in anyway possitive is that Sony's new motion controllers could work well with this kind of tech, however coming from a company that doesn't even provide a HDMI cable with the PS3, this is just balls.

seriously, they should avoid saying stupid things these guys, they were doing so well given recent history.

some things to check in the wording of the article however: they say "3D TV will be in every home by end of 2010", not "a 3d TV..." and just because the PS3 is compatable with every new model TV they're rolling out doesn't mean he said the 3D TV and a PS3 will be in every home. that would be very stupid.

FFS MCV, please stop being ambiguous (sp)

Sony have got this wrong big time, as stated by the responses above me, there is no way "3D TV in every home" is going to happen. Sorry Sony, I don't buy this, HD hasn't even managed to get into every home, and thats with mass marketing towards it. Sometimes I wonder where these execs heads/minds are at, this is a crazy prediction.

That "in every home by 2010" is just corporate speak, Stringer just wants to grab some headlines and tell evryone Sony has brught about another innovation. Seen the tech running and sounds stupid, but I dont like the idea of having to wear some quite frankly cheesey sunglasses whilst watching "heroes" or the latest hollywood comic book to film release. Im also one of the late adopters, I have only owned a HDTV for four months now, so not going to put my hand in my pocket just yet (still waiting for the PS3 to drop to the magic £200 mark lol).

Overall though, the TV market is saturated. Alot of people I know now have their HDTV's sitting on their front room ceilings, so they need to bring out something new to drive profits, and keep the factories churning out. Remember, this is Sony's core business. They dont care so much about gaming as a whole, more the "multi-media experience" and the associated TV's and speaker systems you need in order to buy into that experience. Interesting times. Hope someone events a 3D Tv some day without the need for the aforementioned embarrassing glasses. Gonna make my living room "seduction technique" alot harder if they dont lol.

Like me there are millions on people world wide who wear glasses to correct things like 3d vision and depth of field. I've tried to watch 3d films at the flicks and it simply doesn't work for me with the 3d glasses, everything gets messed up so they might do well pointing this out on the box before a lot of people buy this and can't view anything.

I don't really see the point of 3D TV. There's nothing on half the time anyway so why would I want 3D. I have a slightly HD TV atm but don't have Sky HD or anythign because I won't pay a stupid extra ammount for it. Unless they give them away free and provide some useful 3D programmes I don't see the point. You get all the 3D movies at the moment but half the time the 3D is a gimicky kinda thing anyway. If you want seomthing in 3D go out instead of watching TV!!!!

I cannot believe the tripe they spurt out.

It will make it into one in 5000 homes if they are very lucky.

Deja Vu

Isn't this from the same company that convinced everyone that the PS3 would give us "TrueHD gaming", so everyone bought a 1080p HDTV, only to find 95% of the PS3 stuff is actually in 720p? Who is going to buy 3D TV's with that record of technology support?

And just to expand on Rez's very valid point, not only are there plenty of people who wear glasses, there are also people with single eye deficiencies (like myself) that glasses don't fix.

And then there are people, who don't have a second eye at all, so you can imagine how people like those enjoy 3D. So is he saying, people will buy 3D TV's even if they can't see 3D?

I think Hyundai and Philips might have something to say on that front. I guess it will depend on which company will bulldoze the standards into their corner... money talks, as they say.

Google 3D TV Hyundai to see when this technology was brought to the home, you'll see it was over 12 months ago.

It's funny really to see many companies suddenly emerging in the 3D arena, especially given that Blitz games - in producing Invincible Tiger - has already blazed a trail for the third dimension. I saw this at Videogame Nation at Urbis during a talk by the Olivers and while I was initially sceptical, when I slipped on those glasses, my jaw did drop. Only when you experience it do you see the potential. As gamers we shouldn't dismiss advancing tech. It's what makes our medium so exciting and with a Britsoft dev like Blitz pushing forward ahead of others, it's something to be proud of I reckon.

The only use for a HD TV is Gaming, Blue Ray playback and iffy HD broadcasts.

Now if we throw 3D into it, that shrinks even more.

IMO the money deving 3D should be spent in make HD worthwhile first.

I used to have Elsa Revelator glasses many many years ago, and 3D gaming was superb, most of the time.
Some people found the the whole 3D either underwhelming or uncomfortable. The only way forward with 3D is to ditch any eyewear and go for monitors/tv's capable of 3D.

3D TV PRICE

3D TV in every house by 2010, thats a bit opptermistic for a higher than avarage price tag manufacturer.

If the 3D TV was say £250 every house would have one tommorow, except its SONY and its gonna cost you, about £2500 for one TV so it is not going to happen ASAP by 2010, what an idiot.

Of course the early adopters will pave the way to a price reduction over 5 - 10 years. Thats my prediction. Just look at HDTV took about 6+ years for the price to be resonable.

i doont think you guys understand. these 3d tvs they want in everyhome is glasses free! and having seen one first hand i am excited astounded and bowled over by the quality. check out phillips or newsight .com for more information. dimensionalstudios.com as well fr more info. unfortunately they are £5000 for a 42 inch newsight. (sony). There are 8 of them in xscape in castleford and they are amazing. i was speaking to the manager of cineworld and he said that 80 percent of the movies coming out in 2010 are all 3d. imagine watching tele in your front room, then sticking toystory 3d r whatever in your blueray and having things come jump out at ya with no strain on your eyes, no glasses, amazing.and a hell of a lot of fun! Now unless sony are going to start sellng them for under 2 grand then there is n chance they will be able to shift many. at moment phillips and newsight are doing a 52 inch at 13k lol exciting tho it is that all the major companies are bringing them out, competition, means competitive prices! Lets see what happens. All very exciting tho.
