PS3 Slim sales ‘ahead of expectations’

SCE UK sales director Mark Howsen delighted with new model’s impact at retail

The UK office of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is unsurprisingly delighted with the week one success of its newly redesigned PS3 Slim console.

“The first week's Chart-Track numbers for sales of the new PS3 were ahead of our expectations, so we were extremely pleased,” SCE UK’s sales director Mark Howsen told MCV.

“A new price point and a new machine has proven a significant catalyst to help consumers make the move onto PS3.  Our new advertising campaign, 'The Game Is Just The Start', is also demystifying the value proposition.

“This ongoing campaign and the addition of some great exclusive new IPs (Uncharted: Among Thieves, EyePet, Heavy Rain) and services (PlayStation Video Store), will hopefully provide even more trigger points to drive future purchases of PlayStation 3.”

Ok. . But is this good news for Sony?

If Sony are *still* losing money on each PS3 sold (Slim or fat) the this could be a problem for them.

It all depends who is buying them: If it's PS3 fat owners, then this is terrible news for Sony. If it's anyone else then great they should get the money back for the software, as long as they didn't buy it as a Blu-Ray player.

I guess the attach rate figures will show who these PS3 Slim customers are.

i personnaly think its good, the hardware is shipping and i personally think they are making money on the new slims despite the rumor. they have to be with all the different price points. at least in the uk they must be. if we had an actual US conversion price point it would have been under £200.

fat owners upgrading to a slim is the same causality as 360 owners replacing or upgrading broken or core / arcade units. all 3 companys do things like this its not an exclusive practice u know lol.

if sony is slling more consoles how is that a bad thing?
as kaz said in a recent interview yes they are making a small loss on the ps3 slim, but there making up with that in software sales.
GT5 and FFXIII will be out soon and there going to sell like theres no tomorrow, and ps3s are going to fly off the shelf.
the slim is sold out here in most stores,as so in japan.
VG charts is saying the PS3 has sold just over 500000 units in 1 week.
1 week, shit thats not bad for a console that has no games ;)

personally as a ps3 gamer this is great news yesterday i traded in my old ps3 for the slim version and it runs like a dream.
Xbox gamers can argue that it's still more than the 360 but at the end of the day you're getting an 120gb hard drive and a blu ray player and not to mention a powerful games console
