Porn king calls for PS3 support

Vivid boss keen for Sony to boost adult entertainment industry by making HD movies available worldwide

The kingpin of the world’s largest pornography producer has called on Sony to make downloadable HD adult movies available worldwide through PSN.

The Vivid Entertainment founder and co-chairman, Steven Hirsch, told MCV that he believed the distribution of porn films on PS3 had “real potential” for the adult entertainment industry.

Japanese firm DDM.tv last month revealed that it had launched an HD porn download service for owners of the PS3 – but it is only available in its home territory for the time being.

DDM promised to bring Blu-Ray-quality HD adult movies to those with a PS3, broadband connection, HDMI cable and an HD TV. Movies will be offered for download on a
pre-pay basis.

Hirsch told MCV this week: “[DDM’s launch] is a good start. We hope that Sony will allow adult movies to be downloaded worldwide.

“As long as proper age verification is in place there is no reason why consumers should not be allowed to view adult movies on any device that they desire.

“It’s too early to say to what extent this could help our business, but it certainly has real potential.”

However, MCV understands that neither Sony Computer Entertainment Europe nor America have yet received a formal request from Vivid material for its material to be hosted on the platform.

The porn industry was given a great boost in past years by Sony’s decision to include DVD functionality on PlayStation 2 in 2000.

Vivid’s most popular movies include Cry Wolf, Debbie Does Dallas… Again, Beat The Heat, Blame It On Ginger, The Masseuse, Bad Wives and Filthy’s First Taste.

I'd assume it'd need no more age verification than it would to buy 18+ rated PSN games, which is to be a master account holder (which requires you to be at least 18)

well it's generally believed that porn helped win the betamax/VHS battle and the HD/bluray battle. it's a HUUUUUUUUUGE industry, with lots of dirt-bags throwing money at girls (and men, gay porn is just as suck-sessful).
personally i think they'd be nuts not to but then it would stain Sony's image somewhat.

great thinking about the 3D-TVs! imagine if you will 3D porn, motion controllers and one of those sucking machines with built in vibration! add to that the PS(japs)eye for live webcams etc.

they'd be nuts not to.

HD/Blu Ray

Hmm I think you'll find that HD DVD was the first HD format at retail that had porn on it, not Blu Ray, so it did not really play much part in the HD format war.

Anyhow, the PS3 is ultimately a £250 machine with built in parental controls, should adults be penalised in terms of the functions it can offer because some parents are too lazy, or not bothered until it is too late, to use those controls? I think not.

You're correct in that HD-DVD was the first Hi-Def format to have porn, however initially Sony put out a statement that Porn would not been seen on the Blu-ray format, which they soon retracted when they discovered how influential the industry is in developing and determining new tech formats.

moot point

sorry, moot point i know but i said the the porn industry was influential in the format wars, not excusive to either party. i would imagine (just thinking about it, have no facts) that being able to fit more on a BR disc meant that film publishers could charge more for a single unit. i don't think there's any real advantage over HD other than the room on BR discs. is that right? would HD have had all the online stuff you get with Nr films these days?

@pornstation - perhaps we could have a playwithyourselfstation3? perhaps we could also have DualCock controllers? and the already mentioned PSjapsEye? Sexaxis? Blu-Gay dics anyone?

I'd love to know who is actually keeping the porn industry alive these days? There are so many Porn sites out there with totally free porn - yezzzz, I have done EXTENSIVE research!!!

But if they think there's a market who are Sony to say no?

It would need some kind of strict verification process, and all the applications would have to be passworded - the last thing you would want is your 8 year old daughter picking up the controller to play SIMS and saying "Daddy what is that man doing to that lady?". Gulp!!!

There is a market. Most of the stuff you find on the internet for free is very low quality, low budget stuff. sure 'its good enough' but there's also better stuff for sale. if youre talking about piracy through say a torrent or something then you're not too wrong, but there are still people out there that don't know how to torrent or actually don't steal software...
