3D PS3 games unveiled

Sony shows off software’s compatibility with new tech; 3D gaming to hit Europe ‘in a year’

Sony has allowed consumers to get to grips with 3D PS3 games for the first time at a Berlin trade show.

Titles such as Wipeout HD were available to play in full 3D at IFA. The games on show were standard PS3 titles processed through a new 3D Bravia TV.

Sony confirmed that the new TV would be available in Europe next year, and that future PS3 models would even have the 3D processing capability built into them.

The news follows Sony boss Howard Stringer’s hope that 3D TV would be in the majority of consumers’ homes by the end of 2010.

According to CNet: ‘Over the following two or three years, we were told, [Sony] wants to build the picture-processing technology into the PlayStation itself. That way, gamers will be able to enjoy 3D gaming on any hi-def telly.’

Can't wait

WipEout HD online is a blast, esp. after the Fury update. The idea of being able to play it in 3D already got me started saving up. I trust it will not be cheap, like my PS3 was 2.5 years ago, but I also believe that Sony will show the same kind of top notch quality, and that the 3D effects will not remain just a gimmick. Think of the possibilities of 3D combined with their upcoming motion controls. The PS3 has a very bright future, just look at the exclusive games they're rolling out in the coming months. Saving up for 3D will be hard, but as a WipEout fan I have no choice.

now i've re-read the article and seen the "wants to build the picture-processing technology into the PlayStation itself" bit, i'm a little more optomistic about this. i'd never buy a 3D TV anyway and i'm sure very few people will.
with the new motion sensitive controls it could be really good, in fact i probably wouldn't bother playing with out motion controls.

what we really need are decent glasses and we also need them to think about prescription glasses cos i ,as do so many gamers, wear glasses to see normally. contacts would be cool as well. anybody thought about that? in fact i could wear contacts under my corrective glasses so that would work well for me!
either contacts or cool looking glasses, nothing supid. like i'm not gonna feel studip enough waving my arms about in my living room, then having to wear silly glasses i probably just won't bother.

BTW, i reckon the Sony-Wii style controllers will work better with 3D (and everything else) than Natal. it all depends how accurate Natal is. also using Natal with a current 360 controller won't be any different to using a sixaxis and history has proved that, for the most part, that sucks. the 360 controller and Sixaxis aren't designed to be held with one hand at any point and taking one hand off to wave around wouldn't be great. also i tend to control things with my hands more than my body, feet or head, i kinda evolved that way. in fact we all did, that's why 99% of manual controls are for hands, driving being an obvious exception, and playing drums. but even then, there's a big difference between fine and gross motor. try typing with your elbows, it's a similar thing.

let's hope that sonewhere between, 3D motion and voice controls we still get what we want, good games!

Old tech rebranded

3D TV sets are already out there, this isn't new. 3D gaming is already out there, this also isn't new. If you really want 3D gaming now, then it is out there, just take a trip to the NVidia website.

"future PS3 models would even have the 3D processing capability built into them."
So that's another version of the PS3 on the horizon then? That's one way of completely segregating the market.

Why do they have to over-dramatise everything, to make it sound like they've invented something new all the time. Why can't they simply acknowledge their use of "existing technology"?

Is the concept of "credit where it's due" such a hard thing for Sony to deal with?

From what I can see this is new tech, certainly for the home. Although Sony have choosen to demo PS3 games to highlight it's effectiveness, surely this is just one use, 3d optimised blueray is another.

Although 3D gaming has been on pc's for a few years now, it seems to me that comparing that to these new displays is like comparing VHS to DVD.

I'm not a fan of updating games hardware with different features, because as you say it splits the market, but the amount of these types of sets in our homes in the next few years will be pretty small, people are only now converting to HD sets, and therefore it's still technology that wont be mass Market until the next round of consoles in my opinion. Otherwise Sony will be in the same position as they were on the launch of the PS3, in tht no one wanted, needed or understood why they needed blueray in a games machine and weren't willing to pay for the privilage.
