NPD: Music genre down 46%

Can Beatles: Rock Band reverse the ongoing slump in the music video game genre?

Though the signs are that the world is slowly pulling out of recession, punters are seemingly still proving reluctant to shell out the high cost demanded of modern rhythm action games – leading to ongoing year-on-year sales slumps for the genre.

“With the introduction of Beatles: Rock Band and Guitar Hero 5 in September, a lot of folks have inquired about the performance of these titles and the music/dance genre,” NPD’s Anita Frazier said in the sales tracker’s August report for North America.

“While sales of this genre are down 46 per cent year-to-date, unit sales are down much less because lower prices are playing into the dollar sales decline.

"It's still the third best-selling genre for the year after general action and multiple/other sports – where Wii Fit resides.”

could it have anything to do with music genre sales being at their best when PS2 was still a major format, and that PS3/360 hasn't yet filled the gap? Sure, Wii is getting there in filling the gap left by PS2, but it still has some way to go....

I believe that the pricing scheme needs some attention. I loved those games but to fork out £40+ for essentially the same game with new music tracks doesn't excite me. You usually buy the updates for the songs and not so much for the gameplay.

They should drop the full version to £24.95 and more people will spend money buying individual add-on tracks.
