Activision’s music sequel outdoes EA’s The Beatles: Rock Band at top of the UK Charts
Adding to the Beatles’s loss in the music charts at the hands of the record-breaking Dame Vera Lynn, EA’s licensed games outing The Beatles: Rock Band also missed out on the video games charts crown with Activision’s Guitar Hero 5 emerging victorious to claim the top spot.
Guitar Hero 5 is the first game in the series to reach number one. On a plus note for The Beatles, however, it does manage to chart higher than any previous Rock Band title
In fact, The Beatles has to settle for fourth spot in its debut week in the listings, with Codemasters’ Colin McRae Dirt 2 claiming number two in its first week of release – one place higher than its predecessor managed on its first week. In third place is Eidos’ Batman: Arkham Asylum, which suffers a 60 per cent drop in sales.
Other new entries in the listings include a debut at 13th for Eidos’s Championship Manager 2010, while the publisher’s fellow title Mini Ninjas debuts at 15th. FPS Section 8, published by South Peak, debuts in 22nd spot.
Here’s the ELSPA GfK-ChartTrack All Formats Top 10 in full (for the week ending September 12th):
1. Guitar Hero 5 (Activision Blizzard)
2. Colin McRae Dirt 2 (Codemasters)
3. Batman: Arkham Asylum (Eidos)
4. The Beatles: Rock Band (EA)
5. Wii Fit (Nintendo)
6. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo)
7. IL2 Sturmovik (505 Games)
8. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Activision Blizzard)
9. Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo)
10. Ashes Cricket 2009 (Codemasters)

Did Sony fail DIRT 2?
Can't help to think that DIRT 2 was hampered and not assisted by its Sony takeover on PS3/PSP. AAA it was not, and the last minute change aggravated retailers.
Beatles not No. 1?
I am a little surprised by the performance of The Beatles game. I thought it would go number 1. However I suspect that The Beatles will end up being a long term seller and still be very prominent in the chart at the end of the year and beyond.
Meh
The Beatles: Rock Band was never gonna be a chart smasher. It reflects the band as a whole :P
COD4
I still find it hilarious that pretty much every week for 2 years now COD4 is continually in the top 10.
You'd have though everyone would have had a copy by now!
Its still pretty much full price still aswell - Activision must be laughing themsleves to sleep at night.
More to the topic, I personally don't think the beatles rock band will be a massive seller. Kids these days just won't buy it.
yea
I agree Davey! Especially when you look at the line-up on GH5... The artists on that are what the kids are about these days.

The Beatles 'not a chart smasher'??!! Let's wait and see what happens when their songs become available on iTunes... Top Ten pretty much spoken for. But that's 79p a song. Which is fair... The issue here is not the popularity of The Beatles – nor the target demographic – but the price. It's been a huge barrier to what could have been a great opportunity to get those last few non-gamers through HMV's doors. A plain and simple error.
It has to be said...
... that although the Beatles did some good songs (and some terrible ones!), as something to play along to on a music game, their music is pretty boring. None of the Beatles back then were particularly good musicians, so the guitar, bass, and drums are all pretty mundane and repetitive.
Also, there is such a thing as 'Beatles overload'. After playing 3 or 4 Beatles songs in a row, the last thing you ever want to hear ever again is another Beatles song! At least with GH5 you get a wide variety of great (and fun to play) music.
Visually, Beatles Rock Band gets knocked into a cocked hat by GH5, which finally looks half-decent. I do like how the backgrounds in RBB are sort of like a music video, rather than just being on-stage the whole time, but the models for the band members are terrible!
But....
What are the actual numbers? The thing to take into account was that the beatles game only went on sale on wednesday, giving guitar hero THREE extra days to sell, as the article mentions the week ends on Saturday the 12th, which gave GH last Sun, Mon, and Tues to sell before beatles were out.
@Ray
Guitar hero 5 was released on friday. Beatles was released the wednesday before so it had a 2 day start over guitar hero. I have boycotted Activision products since the price hike announcement concerning COD:MW 2. I hope all of those people that bought GH5 understand that is the first step in koticks plan. Oh well guess I'll have to start renting more. I am not paying an extra £15 a title then have to buy DLC (Disgaea being the worst case for this yet) I hope all of the GH5 players are happy. The COD players will do more damage though.
@Link
Oh wow, consider me a stupid American. GH5 has been out for a couple of weeks here, and I assumed it had the same release date worldwide. Should have known better!
Comparing apples and oranges
I can't understand these comparisons between GH5 and Rock Band:Beatles.
What we're comparing is a COMPLETELY NEW game to a re-skin and new tune selection. RB:B is NOT, I repeat, IS NOT a brand new game, it's the same interface for Rock Band!
Now, if you want to compare numbers, let's compare the chart positions of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Metallica or other brandings to Rock Band: Beatles, and then see which game comes out on top, but that'll make Activision's games look a bit stupid, so we can't do that...
