Watchdog PS3 segment falls flat

Inaccuracies and half-truths decrease credibility of consumer TV show report

A feature on the Sony PlayStation 3 on BBC’s consumer rights show Watchdog last night has left the UK games industry unimpressed thanks to a string of inaccuracies and questionable data.

Kicking off with the claim that PS3 costs £400 – something that hasn’t been true for nearly two years – Anne Robinson and co-presenter Iain Lee made a string of claims regarding PS3 reliability that not only flew in the face of Sony’s claims, but also seemed incredulous to those who own the machine.

Watchdog also boldly stated that 12,500 UK machines had suffered the ‘yellow light of death’, a conclusion drawn from Sony’s claim that 0.5 per cent of the UK’s 2.5m PS3 install base had suffered issues of some description.

However, the show neglected to mention that not all reported problems are related to the YLOD. More significantly, it also brushed over the fact that a 0.5 per cent failure rate is extremely low for any piece of modern consumer electronics.

Sony was also lamented for offering a standard one-year warranty – a practice mirrored by every other consumer tech firm in the country.

Sony was also criticised because some of those who had suffered console failures had lost the data stored on the machine. To blame Sony for consumer’s inability to back up their data is, frankly, outlandish.

The BBC also had to contend with the embarrassment that four of the eleven machines it repaired in its ‘PlayStation Repair Action Team van’ had broken again in the time between filming and the show going to air.

Let's not forget, either, the bizarre moment when the show cut to an x-ray shot of the PS3 which allegedly showed 'trapped gas' in the circuits which Sony claims is not to blame for the problems. No explanation of this was given.

I agree. I just thought the piece was weak and poorly structured. It was so sensationalist that it made me laugh out loud. I recall another item on The One Show which covered GAME not taking back a faulty console. In that instance the retailer has to concede they were wrong but MS would have helped those people out anyway. Another non-story.

WE ARE HAVING ISSUES WITH SONY AT THE MOMENT. WE OWN A PLAYASTION 3, PURCHASED NOV 07, THEREFORE OUT OF IT'S 12 MTH WARRENTY.
THE PROBLEM IS IT WON'T PLAY BLUERAYS, INCLUDING THE GAMES. SONY'S REPLY WAS SIMPLY TO BIN IN AND PURCHASE A NEW ONE. WHEN WE INSISTED THIS WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH AS WHEN ALL SAID AND DONE THE UNIT IS STILL UNDER 2 YEARS OLD, WE PURCHASED IT AT £385, NOT CHEAP FOR A GAMES CONSOLE!! AND IT'S NO LONGER FIT FOR THE PURPOSE INTENDED. SONY THEN SUGGESTED THAT THEY COULD SELL US A RE-CONDITIONED UNIT FOR £128, WE HAVE TO SEND OUR BROKEN ONE BACK, THE GUARANTEE ON THE RE-CONDITIONED UNIT WILL BE 3 MONTHS. SO WHAT HAPPENS IN MONTH 4 OR 5 MONTHS TIME SHOULD IT FAIL AGAIN?? IT'S JUST NOT THE SERVICE WE EXPECTED FROM SUCH A GIANT IN THE INDUSTRY. VERY DISAPPOINTING.
OUR CONFIDENCE IN SONY IS FAILING. IN THE LAST 6 WEEKS, OUR SONY VIDEO CAMERA HAS BROKEN, OUR PSP HAS BROKEN AND NOW THE PLAYSTATION 3!! JUST WAITING FOR THE TV TO BREAK NEXT !!!!!!!!

Watchdog is utterly sh1t now anyway. It used to be quite a serious programme championing the light of people genuinely being ripped off. Now it's just an hour of poorly researched b0ll0x. I'm not the PS3's biggest fan but I own one and feel it was very unfairly treated.

A complete waste of licence payer's money.

how is the device failing when its sales are up 1000% in the EU/UK, 400% in USA, and its catching up with xbox 360 in terms of numbers sold, especially considering ps3 was released nearly 2 years later. imo the BBC should redo the program with accurate information.

Acctually to be 'fit for purpose' a peice of electronics has to last for 3 years, if it gives up before that and you can show it hasn't been abused then the manufactorer has to repair or replace it.

The fact they offer a 1 year warranty means nothing. If you take them to the small claims court they should be forced to repair/replace it as it wasn't fit for purpose. This applies to all electrical products regardless of if they have warranty or not.

There is a biggish point here but as usual Watchdog got it completely wrong.

1. The retailer is responsible for reliability issues present in the design or manufature. Sony is acting perfectly reasonably unless sold from a Sony shop. But Watchdog needs to prove the cause was down to a defect present at the time of sale. Just like the Samsung fridge debacle, you can't blame the manufacturer, they do not get the profit margin to cover for this sort of thing. Retailers do and watchdog keeps letting them off the Sale of Goods Act hook.

2. You cannot reflow oldish PCBs (I assume that's what they are doing) without baking them first (at a lower temperature to drive out moisture), they are probably causing just as many faults as they are fixing.

They are onto something but these problems can take a while to diagnose.

"Actually to be 'fit for purpose' a peice of electronics has to last for 3 years"

Nuh uh. There's no such set amount of time. The sales of goods act says it should last for a reasonable time, in most cases proportionate to the price paid. This would be a tricky one to defend from either side - as there's not really anythign else similar to the PS3 to compare it to.

Claiming a that a product was "inherently faulty at the point of purchased" is another mis-understood part. Currently the law suggests that after 6 months of owning the item, it's down to the consumer to produce an independant engineers report stating that the fault was inherent at time of purchase. Before that point, it's down to the manufacturer/retailer (depending on who you're talking to) to prove otherwise.

Completely agree, this whole debarcle could end up as a huge embarrassment for the Beeb and kill off what tiny shred of credibility Watchdog had left - the fact they resorted to making YouTube style comedy songs frankly defied belief! The facelift given to this show is proving to be even more disastrous than the facelift given to it's presenter...

It was also irresponsible to make up some scare story about "bubbles of gas" in the circuit boards when this is something present in most circuit boards and in the 3 tested (one of which was user modified) below the acceptable tolerance - the company that did those tests drew no firm conclusions on the existence of a inherent manufacturing problem which wasn't what was portrayed on the show - it's the type of pseudo-science claims Watchdog used to investigate other people for!

And to not mention that the company they used for P.R.A.T. normally charge £103.50 for the repair (that doesn't seem to work very well) compared to Sony's £128 when the whole point of the show was to investigate the cost of Sony's OOW repair is shocking.

In general the continued branding of the problem as "Yellow Light of Death" and portrayal of it as a widespread single point of failure, despite Sony providing evidence to the contray (which didn't get a mention) is borderline libellous!

Okay, first off, I had the yellow light problem, my PS3 was bought on launch day and was about 9 months out of warranty... I was frustrated that Sony wouldn't replace the console but understood it wasn't their fault and I was very impressed they were prepared to help me at all. I got a factory refurbed machine for a fee... I agree with this article completely, the BBC dropped the ball completely on the report and I have made an official complaint to them and OFCOM. The one point you made and made me laugh (i work in IT) was the whole 'all my photos are still on the HD!' I have lost count of the times I've told people to back important files, hard drives fail and if you lose important data it's your own damn fault!!!!

Tony are you really that stupid? The profit on a PS3 is around £14. So does the retailer makes enough to repair mistakes by a manufacturer? No. The manufacturer DOES make a profit otherwise they wouldn't operate it's common business sense. How is the retailer responsible if the product is faulty. They cannot see the future reliability of the product. Retailers do not carry out the R+D and would not know how the unit is built. I understand that retailers are held responsible but ultimately that must lie with the manufacturer. My PS3 went wrong at 23 months old. I didn't have a problem paying £145 to repair mine as it is the centre piece of my living room. As for watchdog. They never covered Activision's flippant attitude towards Guitar hero World Tour faults. I never got my Drum Kit repaired and eventually moved over to rock band. I contacted Watchdog about this and they never got back to me.

I bought the original 60GB PS3 and so far it has died twice on me but both times I called Sony and they simply said that they would send out a replacement and both times it was out of warranty.

Basically the machine just froze and turned off and wouldn't come back to life. Not sure if they have a policy for this problem which is different to others but they were happy to replace free of charge. They send out a new/refurbished one and collect mine.

2nd time I had to either wait for stock which was 3-4 weeks or take the 80GB which wasn't backward compatible and only has 2 USB slots but could have got it sent out immediately. I chose to wait.

I spent 5 yrs working for a major UK insurance company and you will be surprised how many times we turned down claims for out of warrenty break downs, but every so often you get someone quoting the sales of goods act and if its procured from a major supplier/brand we roll over.

My ps3 from Game broke after 16months, quoted sales of goods - direct replacemet 4 weeks later.... try it.

Sony should sue watchdog over this.

Only 0.5% failure rate, thats extremely low, the xbox360's failure rate for comparison is estimated to be 51%.....

Yes you get the odd one that breaks, shit happens, xbox's break, fridges, tv's they all break eventually.

Sony DOES NOT make a profit on a sale of a console it actually loses money, it makes money through the sales of games and blu ray dvd's, licensing etc.

Sony's support after the warranty is up is actually brilliant , the vast majority of manufacturer's including Microsoft would not even offer you a discounted refurbished model, they would tell you to bin it and buy a new one at full price

The PlayStation 2 has been solid since 1999 and it had problems right out of the gate. Sony boasts their console's life spans because that tactic works. It worked with the PS1 and PS2 despite the problems they had early on. Coming from someone who's had history with those consoles, I can tell you that a console that fails 3 years in won't stop it from gaining popularity over that time. If Sony ever promised that the PS3 would be your source of HD Entertainment ten years to come, you could put money on that. Just look at how many PS3s have been sold as Blu-Ray players.

The BBC needs to answer to this joke of a show. Fire everyone involved before they destroy your name. Sony makes great consoles. I have a US PS2 that I bought the first day the PS2 came out in the US and it still works. My Playstation lasted until a couple months before the PS2 came out. It finally just wore out. Now I have a 60GB PS3 I bought a couple months after the PS3 came out and still no problems. It does have a 320GB hard drive now though. The BBC needs to stop trying to attack a problem that doesn't exist. All electronics will have their issues no matter what. Don't stir up a controversy just to get ratings. This is a dark day for the BBC.

Sorry guys but your PS3s aren't infallible! Do you remember the PS2? I think you do... But do you remember DRE (Disk Read Error) that afflicted PS2s built with in the first couple years of that generation?

Better yet, do you find it interesting that you cannot find ANYTHING about DRE for the PS2 on Wikipedia? Do you remember that Sony was sued and they agreed to settle its "disc read error" lawsuit by paying affected gamers US$25, a free game from a specified list, and (of course) the reduced cost repair or replacement (at SCEA’s discretion) of the damaged system?

Why so much reimbursement for a small percentage of failures? Because it wasn't a small percentage! And no one remembers this only 7 years ago (back in 2002)!

Sony is doing a wonderful job of making sure that no one knows anything about anything concerning failures of the PS3. And to make their job 1000Xs easier, RROD stole the spot light! So now, anyone who says that they have or had YLOD is automatically labeled as a liar and/or an Xbot.

No one [i.e. PS fans] remembers, because they have been literally reprogrammed, don't want to remember, or are simply too jaded to remember!

I find this whole debate very strange. I've got a launch PS3 and haven't had any problems with it.

Why is it no one is talking about the xbox 360 here. That has had an incredible failure rate with the "RROD" problem. As far as I can see Sony's "yellow light" is tiny compared to Microsoft's hardware issues.

Chaps

Not sure if much use to any of you but i too unfortunately experienced the YLOD not so long ago. I purchased an original 60GB release ps3 for a whopping £600 bundled with a few games etc ! ! So you can imagine my disappointment to see the machine just roll over and die on me!

I too followed the usual steps and called Sony customer care who although extremely polite and professional told me due to an out of warranty console i would have to pay them £150 for a refurbished machine with a 3mth warranty ! ! WTF ! ! To make matters even worse they told me that all my saved data on my upgraded 320Gb HDD would be lost due to the new console having to re-format the disk! !

Now before you all kick off and tell me how the ps3 offers a backup utility and that its my own fault for not doing this let me just point out a few things. A 320Gb HDD takes HOURS to back up. It’s a long, slow process and the more you play, the more data you have and the longer this backup will take you !! My last back up was a few months before my beloved machine kicked the bucket ! In that time to name just a few I imported Demon Souls an amazing yet unforgiving game which absorbed hours upon hours of pure dedication (no joke if you haven’t played this yet this probably wont mean much to you but loosing this was a HUGE blow. . . . .nearly enough to make a grown man break down and cry ! !) . I played through Infamous nearly 80% complete plus numerous odds and sods with my girlfriend jumping around on LBP and the lads completely embarrassing me on FIFA,COD4, Singstar and GHWT ! !

Sony clearly advertised the ps3 as not just a games console but a media center and quite rightly too. They gave us the option to expand our memory to store all our personal files and media. Its clear times are changing and as we advance in this technological driven society more games are now been offered to download instead of purchase on a disc, movie and music is practically there already and I’m sure as we go on this will become the norm and many many retailers will follow suit or ultimately fail.

My point to my little rant here is a system that honors itself in doing “everything” and that is pushed and advertised in a competitive market as being a “next generation console” Sony should surely recognize just how important it is to protect its customers against hardware faults and failures. The YLOD being a prime example.

Now bare with me here because this is where things start to get interesting and hopefully be of some use to you. There was no way that I was paying Sony £150 for a refurbished machine only covered for 3mths and loosing all my data in the process. My confidence in the console in terms of reliability was obviously knocked and how would I know in 3thms time the same YLOD wouldn’t appear again and then I would have to pay up yet another £150. Not only that but this wasn’t me breaking my console this was a hardware failure on Sony’s part. Trust me at an original purchase of £600 plus an upgraded HDD say £80 or whatever, extra controllers, headsets plus all the games and downloadable content why on earth would I not look after my shiny new toy !?

The first few Sony representatives I reached via their customer care number weren’t much use to me at all. In my opinion they basically had no authority to offer me anything bar the bog standard script they had been handed. Three or four calls later and as my frustrations grew and my complaints escalated I was soon told a “supervisor” would call me back within 48 hours. Indeed by the end of that day I received a call from a lady who was a supervisor. She had been updated on my case which was good because I was in no mood to repeat myself yet again of my pure dissatisfaction with Sony. This is where for the first time in all my efforts I saw some flexibly and actual assistance from Sony.

The call began with a pure reiteration of what I had already been told several times before, £150 3mths guarantee take it or leave it. I adamantly refused this and heightened my complaints. I told Sony I had heard of other cases in which free refurbished machines had been sent to other customers in the same circumstances. (Thank you Google!) They obviously denied this and with no hard evidence except several loose internet forum comments I was out on a last limb.

However, the supervisor did suggest to me although she was not flexible on the price she could offer me an extended guarantee of 12mths. Ok so at least Sony are trying but come on an extra few months security with all the other problems still evident ! No chance ! I told the supervisor plain and clear it wasn’t good enough. I asked what there official complaints procedure was and that I wanted to escalate this through to Sony Head Office. She told me there was no number but she would note all of my complaints on record under my call ref and send this on to her head office. She also said that she would guarantee that someone from Head office would call me.

By this time I had all but given up and looked to alternate means to fix my console. I decided to take it to a local private company who could do the repair for £60 they too offered me 3mths warranty. So I paid less than half what Sony asked for, I got the same guarantee plus my console was fixed there and then on the spot. (It took about 20 mins) and I lost none of my data and retrieved the disc that was stuck inside ! !

Ok so now I have a working console again for now ! I got home plugged my external HDD and performed a backup almost immediately. Several hours later and the back up was complete. That’s one less thing to worry about or so I thought ( I will explain in a sec)

Now your probably expecting me to slate Sony here for what clearly shows they are ripping there customers off! I’m not going to though. My ps3 didn’t last much longer and one day after only being switched on for less than 10mins it died. I’m back with the YLOD. I tried this a couple of times with the private company until I was refunded my money. Ok no big deal I’m back to where I started but with an up-to-date back up right ? Well not so much.

Here comes another complaint, Sony’s good old trusted back up feature. You know the one they told me I should have performed and that’s its my own fault I lost my data because I didn’t. Sony’s excuse for people who have lost their data for whatever reason .Well its not too great. In fact its pretty damn awful. Certain games carry copy protection. (DRM) Meaning you cant back up these games files, that’s right they wont transfer ! ! KZ2 gone ! Demon Souls Gone ! Google it there are loads of titles that you cant backup. Not only that but all game installs have to be reinstalled, all downloads have to be redownloaded and then reinstalled ! ! All patches have to be updated ! ! All accounts have to be reactivated and set up. As for Singstar and the likes where your online purchases are made from a separate store well that’s another long call to Sony people. Followed by a wait, a few emails and then the eventual redownload process all over again ! !

If your wondering how I came across all of this with a broken console then that’s because of the call I received back from head office. This just keeps getting better right ! !

The Sony representative who called was extremely helpful and I finally reached someone who seemed to understand my frustrations and want to help. After a quick recap he offered me the following. For £99 a new refurbished machine, 12mths guarantee and an “ID Swap”. An ID Swap apparently is the rare process they can offer in order to transfer all your existing data onto a new console. I agreed paid the money and the next day a courier arrived and took away my broken machine.

I wish I could end my rant there and say finally everything was sorted but it wasn’t the case. I understood because of the rare ID Swap this may take slightly longer than Sony’s standard turn around. Fair enough so I won’t have it back in a few days. Well a few weeks went by and nothing from Sony so I called (yes another phone call ! ! ) for an update. Good old bog standard customer care picked me up. .. . .the lovely chaps with the scripts ! ! They spent a good 10mins reading through all the posts against my call ref and then told me its with head office and there policy is 14-28working days.

So 28 working days later and still nothing. Another few phone calls and im told to wait a little longer.

6-7 weeks later I had well and truly had enough and asked to get the chap from head office back to me. He didn’t as apparently he was on holiday but eventually I was handed to his cover. The man to pick up all the pieces! Apologetic and helpful he told me he was on the case and would ensure it was resolved immediately. Upon his call back he basically admitted not being able to locate my console! This was a few days after the announcement of the new Slim. He offered me the new console as sold as retail (packaging, cables, controller etc) and either a new HDD or accessories or games for inconvenience. I obliged and am now the proud owner of a new ps3 slim which was waiting for me on release day. The accessories a Bluetooth headset and key board are still yet to arrive!

In conclusion a little moan and persistence may well be worth the wait. Im down £99 and have lost a good few games saves plus all the aggravation caused from Sony but im now happy with my new Slim console. As for Sony lets hope they see this and take note as this can only be an issue that is going to escalate over time and needs to be addressed. Offer your loyal customers with a service to repair their existing consoles Sony ! No one wants to loose their precious saved data. Readdress your current service and especially its rates. £150 and 3mths warranty is unacceptable. YLOD is an issue and a hardware issue that you should be fully liable and at fault to.

Attempt to conect the YLoD with RRoD

This BBC show was a blatant attempt to conect the PS3 yellow light (that goes up when the console detects a wide set of possible problems) with the (taken as a FACT by many) design problems X360 had since launch. Its pathetic really. I do hope Sony sues them for that, even if I have my doubts about it. If Sony have factual proofs of its numbers (that 0.5% failure hate) then its a win. All eletronic contraptions will eventualy fail, there are too many little pieces inside them, just a minor voltage variation on the energy grid can burn something inside and then, your eltronic whatever goes null. The thing is, if you wanna compare a company that will refurbish your console for about a third of its price, at a loss, with a warranty at the job with a particular contractor, whos trying to make money on you by the way, and pretty much f***s your warranty in the process, it shows how intelligent you are. Lets not forget that the price diference between the repairs (sony 128 pounds(all included) i think against 103 pounds of the other, without shipping to boot) is another sign, either of or lack of inteligence.

Well, you wouldn't write like that if you had a YLOD. I had it last month and if I hadn't repaired it via youtube tutorial, by heating the processor, I'd had lost ALL MY DATA!! All of my pictures and music. People should be allowed to restore their data from the HDD after the machine breaks. It's priceless! Luckilly for me, I repaired my PS3 and restored my data before it broke down again after a week. I feel for poor people who weren't lucky like me. And don't mention backup. What's the use of having a 200GB PS3 HDD with pictures etc if you have to keep all the duplicates of that data on another 200GB HDD?

PS3 Issues

You can not simply discount the issue with PS3(yellow light) highlighted on the BBC watchdog because you think their reporting was bias. The greater issue here is brand equity and whether Sony needs to response thereby bring the brand alive. As a student of marketing am quite surprised at Sony's position :purchase decision based on brand promise and in this case Sony has not delivery the expected customer experience or support, let's remember that the customer are the life blood of every business and therefore need to pay attention to these important customers (bottom line)

What type of marketing student are you? Go in the real world before you start making idealistic assumptions that cause brand damage.

The mere notion that PS3's have an inherent fault is nonsense. The ehole program was beyond a joke. Not just against Sony but consumers as well as intelligence.

The issue here isn't the 360, and it isn't whether the PS3 has a better failure record than anything else. The issue is that consumers are being ripped off by being charged high repair fees for something that should be covered by the Sale Of Good Act, since one or two years is absolutely unquestionably NOT a reasonable amount of time for something as expensive as a PS3 to last.

Microsoft took the hit and extended the 360 warranty to three years. Sony only have their own penny-pinching to blame for the bad PR.

@RevStu - MS had to extend their warranty to 3 years due to a proven manufacturing fault on their part which caused overheating under normal usage conditions. There is no 'proven' fault with the PS3 - in fact there is proven reliability in the 0.5% failure rate.

The biggest problem with faulty PS3s in my experience is due to overheating BUT it is because people are not following the usage guidelines. When people stuff their PS3 consoles inside a media cabinet or sit it on top of a 'hot' PVR box or whatever where it doesn't have sufficient ventilation then its life will be severely shortened. Same with any high powered electronic device. If you stuffed your PC into a wooden box with no air flow how long do you think that would last?

As I said, it doesn't matter what the failure rate and blaming consumers is a red herring. Almost nobody ever reads the manual for anything and a consumer product should function in the environment it will realistically be used in. The SOGA stipulates that things should last a reasonable amount of time, and given how much Sony bang on about a ten-year cycle for PS3, people have a right to expect more than 18 months out of one before paying half the purchase price again for a repair.

And the SOGA will only back you up if you have followed the instructions. If you have not followed the instructions, even if "almost nobody ever reads the manual for anything", then you are not using the device correctly and your warranty is void. Simple as that. You cannot have a realistic expectation to use a device in a way which goes against the instruction manual. No company should have to absorb the cost of morons who cannot be bothered to read how to set something up properly. The Sale of Good Act will not help you.

0.5% Failure Rate...

posted by ChrisW Sep 27, 2009 at 4:53 pm

Doesn't anyone think that 0.5% failure rate is a little too low?

Apple's Ipod has a 5.6% failure rate. Ford Motor's F250 Crate Engine Block has a 1.5% failure rate. Medtronic Pacemakers have a predicted 1.1% failure rate. Nintendo's Wii has a 2.7% failure rate.

I pulled these three electronic and non-electronic items randomly off a Google search. And to be honest, it seems rather impossible to have a low failure rate that Sony is presenting. I don't believe it! But at the same time I don't believe it's higher than 10% (an analysis made by SquareTrade.com)!!

Every big corporation has the ability to skew numbers to make things look impressive. If you truly believe that PS3s only have 0.5% failure rate then you are being duped. Sony's track record of skewing numbers (not always absurdly) about failure rates goes way beyond the PS2 with its DRE and TVs, PCs (Viao), and other products. People need to learn to trust the public and the statistic professionals, not the corporations!

Look at MS, they skewed the numbers about RROD! Is Sony any different? Aside from total % of failure rate... NO! They are also a GIGANTIC corporation that deals with electronics. No corporation is going to tell the 100% truth about anything unless they are subpoenaed in court, and even then they may not tell everything (which is not lying, but it’s not telling the truth either!)

Don't be fooled. 0.5% is a false number. It's what Sony and Hardcore Fanyboys want you to hear. It's propaganda and you guys are taking it hook, line, and sinker!
