BBC defends Watchdog report

Consumer show stands firm in face of strong criticism from Sony; ratings slump for Robinson

Following last night’s focus on alleged manufacturing problems with Sony’s PS3 on BBC consumer rights show Watchdog, the broadcaster has fought back in its war of words with platform holder Sony.

Yesterday’s show, which has since been widely ridiculed by the UK games industry (and, indeed, MCV) claimed that Sony is cheating customers by refusing to fix what the show described as a systematic issue with launch versions of the next-gen console.

Sony responded by claiming that the allegations were inaccurate and that PS3 has a reliability record far in excess of the average fro consumer electronics.

However, the Watchdog website has issued a response of its own: “More than 150 Watchdog viewers have contacted us to say they've experienced [the yellow light of death] and by Sony's own admission, around 12,500 of the 2.5m PlayStations sold in the UK have shut down in this way since March 2007.

“The problem is mainly thought to affect the 60GB launch model, but Sony repeatedly refuses to release the failure rate for that model, claiming that the information is commercially sensitive.

“Sony dislikes the term ‘the yellow light of death’ since it implies a single fault is afflicting all consoles. It says the flashing yellow light is a ‘non-specific fault indicator that can be triggered in a range of different circumstances’.

"Sony adds that the yellow light could indicate a problem caused by ‘any one of a range of issues that may inevitably affect any complex item of consumer electronics’.

“So if there isn't one single thing that's causing thousands of machines to stop working, why does it appear that one single repair appears to get them working again?”

It’s worth noting that Sony has not stated that 12,5000 machines have suffered from the YLOD in the UK – it has only said that under 0.5 per cent of machines have experienced problems.

Meanwhile, The Guardian reports that last night’s episode, which is the second in the latest series, suffered a significant slump in viewers with 700,000 fewer people tuning in than the week before.

SONY have by far the best record in the Industry and if they say lower than 0.5 % then that is what it is. Watchdog will fall on their swords on this just as the Dutch programmes did. They are taking a very sample of consumers. In Hollland it was once reported by a journalist that 75% of X Boxes were coming back based on the fact that he was in a store that had sold 4 that day (Monday) and the shopkeeper when asked how many he had back on the same day, said 3. The journalist forgot to ask the shopkeeper when the store takes back the consoles.....there was a sign that said, any faulty games machines we will take back and fast track on Mondays and Wednesdays because they are slow days. Watchdog is the same.

Yes - thanks to "Tomo" from Sony PR for that posting.

What WatchDog should have done, rather than host a stunt repair shop was to inform consumers that warranty or not, under European Law that Sony are obliged to fix a consumer electrical (under 6 years old) that has presented a fault not caused due to misuse.

That would have been public service broadcasting.

Alright that get this bit LAW correct.

1) Sony is under NO obligation to fix PS3 ever!
2) Retail is one with ALL responsibility under law!

This all down to fact you contract (ie where percuss from) was not Sony but the retailer and retailer is respectable for up to 6 years.

Now I do agree BBC should info consumers of there legal rights. Well they have done on programs like "Don't get done get Don" but never been had said them on Watchdog, strange but true.

@3,4,

Ultimately the machines have to go back to Sony or a Sony authorised repair centre.

Retail have to provide a machine that is fit for purpose

@Tomo "SONY have by far the best record in the Industry..."

Sorry what? Sony has the best record for what in the industry?

If you are talking "product quality" then perhaps remind us all about the hundreds of thousands of PS2s that had to be replaced when it launched and the DRE's on later models.

If any company has a record for build quality then that would be Nintendo. It's very rare to hear that their systems go awry - especially this gen - comparing the Wii to the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Also "...and if they say lower than 0.5 % then that is what it is."

Really? It's great to hear that a PR department of a company tells the honest truth all the time. Oh wait they don't.
Fact is Sony (and all games companies) spin things so that it seems better for them.

And while Watchdog's report might seem inaccurate, it still shows that the PS3 does have a particular issue.
Maybe this issue doesn't present itself as much as the Xbox 360's "Red Rings" - but if they were able to find that many people who have all had exactly the same problem, that is easily fixed in the same way, then it's obvious that there is a problem.

They could have reported on it differently though and gone with the cold facts, rather than trying to make entertainment of it all - there was especially no need for that incredibly cheesy song at the end of the segment.

so to watchdog, all i wanna say is leave sony alone, there's enough a big enough console war goin on as it is, we don't need bogus reports from you to make things worse. things go wrong, TVs, DVDs, disabled people.....it just happens.

and yes im a PS3 owner and i don't have any beef with 360 owners. ENJOY GAMING!!!!!!

Though this is a little funny, it's also quite scary. Regardless of how you feel about Sony, or the Playstation3, the article in that programme was quite simply appalling. Almost everything they said was untrue or misrepresented. I do not want my licence fee to pay for that. There was nothing impartial about it (which is what the BBC charter insists upon), especially when it was written and presented by that Ian Lee, who is an avid, self admitted Sony hater, who is a freelance Microsoft journalist. Mmmm!

I hope to see a fur and feathers fight.

Watchdog - TrashTV

Biggest load of tripe I have ever watched, and it's shameful I am paying BBC a licence fee to broadcast this tripe.

The reality of it, as far as I can tell is 12,500 PS3 failures in the UK, out of 2.5m consoles sold. That's 0.5% (the industry benchmark for this type of product is 3%), Microsoft on the other hand have 60% failure rates.

Watchdog have tarred Sony with the same brush as Microsoft.

All the failed units were outside their 1yr warranty, and with 99% of consumer goods, 1yr is all you get, its upto you to extend it if you wish for additional cost. This is perfectly reasonable considering the low failure rate. (Microsoft only upped theirs because they were forced to by the FTC in the US).

The "15minute fix" clearly does not work, as many of the units failed again afterwards, sure you pay more by getting Sony to fix it, but they clearly do a proper job on them, not a quick lash up.

Really the only real criticism was the 3month warranty Sony give on repaired units, if they were to up to a 1yr warranty, then I don't think people would complain too much at paying £120 (a 1yr warranty extension taken out after purchase is typically £40), especially considering it included 2 way door to door service and 48hr turnaround.

The fact the that the article was written by, and partly presented by Iain Lee, Microsoft freelance writer, Xbox fanboy and author of this "gem" of Sony Hate...

http://tech.uk.msn.com/gaming/article.aspx?cp-documentid=7838134

Shows how desperate Watchdog are, clearly the timing with the launch of the slim is not co-incidental. This was nothing short of a PR stunt by Microsoft by manipulating Watchdog into reporting this.

If you look around the PS3 and Xbox forums, you can see people being encouraged to report problems to Watchdog. It's clear to me, that this was not 150 people that all coincedently decided to report their problems all at the same time ot watchdog, this was a manipulated effort to mislead them. Any fool can see that.

This is perhaps the worse Microsoft stunt I have seen pulled. Worse than paying PR companies to stand inline to buy Xboxes pretending to be grass roots gamers. (My brother works for a PR company in London, and was paid to stand in line by Microsoft, he told me at least 50% of the other people inline worked for PR companies from what he could tell).

When you pay 425 pounds you shouldn't expect it to fail.

I myself have not had this yellow light of death problem, and yes Microsoft are much worse with failure rates; but you have a three year warranty and its around the 60 pound mark to get it fixed.

I have both a PS3 and X BOX 360, im no fanboy.

And Nintendo's just don't seem to break.
I'm glad watchdog did what they did, maybe company's will try and create a console that will work and not blame the consumers by saying we didn't give it enough room to breathe so it got to hot or such rubbish.

Rant over.

Bottom line, the information they supplied in this article was rife with inaccuracies, half-truths and outright lies. The industry standard for warranties is 1 year, and if you have a problem with that, get the industry standard changed. Stop trying to defend the BBC, like it's some holy grail of great journalism. They may have been once, but of late, they've proven that they'll broadcast any piece of tripe they can get their hands on.

Sony's going to rape these guys in court, and it's going to be hilarious to watch.

sony really sucks

sony are such bullys

This generation has had them lying through thier teeth non-stop. I really want to see the real figures for failures. Why won't sony release them? Because they're scared.... just look at thier reply... they're scared.

Eurocom presented an excellent article about a top UK repair centre (used by many UK retailers). They delt with out of warranty 360's and ps3's. On average they recieve a 60/40 split between the 360 and ps3.

According to the repairers, the two machines have one similar problem causing the majority of issues... the solder! The law changed as to the content of lead in solder... solder without lead is just not as reliable. Over time dry joints appear. Of all the things to fail... it's solder.

So I guess in the deluded mind of the sonyfanboy sonys solder is better than the xbox... seriously man... the YLOD is bigger than sony want you to think... as there aggressive and highly defensive response has shown.

Well I have to be honest and say up till now I've never even heard of this "YLOD" Yellow Light Of Death issue. Which is a little strange because the PS3 has been around for some time now. This does all smell a little of Watchdog making a mountain out of a mole hill, probably to increase controversy and therefore viewers. It is disappointing to see the BBC resorting to such cheap tactics as this.

Ok it was an over the top article from Watchdog but lets get it into perspective. Watchdog had something to say and they said it. They pointed out Sonys opinion, they pointed out that Iain Lee is an Xbox fan. They even pointed out that some of their repairs failed again. So they admit that the repairs didn't all work for a long time. Fair enough.

Im not saying Microsoft are better than Sony or the other way around because anyone who belives and repeats the so called "stats" is a complete idiot. With any consumer item you pay your money and take your chance. But there is one issue I have with Sony.

The issue I have with this is that it is majorly suspicious that Sony charge over £120 for a repair and only offer 3months warranty on that repair. In my mind thats like saying they know there is an issue. But hey thats just my opinion.

I hear what your saying Glasgow, and I agree..................
BUT, and this is a big but - but it's a standard but across the industry.
Most OOW repairs carried out by the companies own repairers carry a 3 month warranty. Sky TV - digi box cost £65 to replace and only has a 3 month warranty. Samsung and Panasonic TV's (both) repaired out of warranty by the makers £99 AND £150 respectivly.

I have a 60gb PS3, I queued up at midnight to get it but it still works fine. I my own experience, you have to prove that your PS3 is at fault. SONY are not saying that there is a problem - the failure rate is low I'm sorry to say, but Microsoft did say - ooops, we cocked up they're maybe a little problem.

Other repairers may charge less to repair your PS3, but none I know give more than 3months warranty on that repair - why should they??
