PS2 titles coming to PSN

Sony intends to bring PS2’s entire back-catalogue to PSN

In what would be the most significant development in the history of the PlayStation Network, Sony is planning on bringing the entire PS2 back-catalogue to its digital content platform PSN, MCV can reveal.

The move adds credibility to the many cynics who questioned Sony’s insistence that its decision to remove PS2 backwards compatibility from PS3 was a cost-cutting move and not a strategic one.

Such a move would likely be unpopular at retail as it would likely have a negative effect on the sale of PS2 boxed titles.

The information comes from a leaked document obtained by MCV.

If they make us re-buy the games without the option to be able to play discs we already own I will seriously consider getting rid of my PS3 altogether.
I held off buying a PS3 because of the backwards compatibility debacle and if they now try to fleece us for functionality that should be in there for free it will be the end of my long relationship with the PS brand.

Playin PS2 Disks on PS3

I can download PS1 games as well as buy them in the case (and play on my PS3),,,,,,,. If they did that with ps2 GAMES, I would purchase PS2 downloads even if I could buy them in the case. They could also continue to Release Boxed games for the 100 million PS2 Owners on there PS3's. If they don't include the ability to play PS2 DISKS as well as download off the PSN , it would be a tragedy.

it always makes me laugh when people cry about bc, if you bought a ps3 are you telling me you want to play fifa 2002 and not fifa 10 ps3 version, i do understand people with a large collection but go buy a used 60gig ps3 !!!! get ext warrenty on it and your done, we sell ps3 60gig for £200, seriously, or just keep your ps2, why such a massive deal, ps3 is for ps3 games, i want to move forward not backwards,
if you dont want to pay for digital ps2 games then dont, go buy a 360 since sony has wronged you personally

Look Henry, the outrage here is when Sony was bringing out the PS3 they promised the console would have backwards compatibility, which was meant to mean that current PS2 owners would upgrade to PS3 and obviously not everyone has the same tastes. Some people like the fact they can play there classic games retro style on PS2 time to time and to now say people have to pay to play these games via PSN is ludicrous. Is this Sony's way of actually making money out of the free PSN i wonder???

ps3 was backward compatible when it released now its not,

BC = Overhyped

I agree with Henry Ford, BC has got to be one of the most overhyped features this generation! I bought a launch PS3 and used BC for about a month (God of War II & Tomb Raider Anniversary) before I began buying PS3 titles. There are PS3 games I've not had time to revisit/finish, never mind PS2 ones!

If they did something to them - like God of War where they have given it a HD polish and added trophies - then I would rebuy a select few titles that I really enjoyed, but charging like they do for PSOne games would be shooting themselves in the foot! I also find it a little strange saying "all PS2 games" when they currently have so much trouble bringing PSOne games to the PSN.

But then this is a leak from an internal document, so I wouldn't read much into it yet - for all we know this could be a standalone adaptor you plug into the USB, it could be a firmware update to allow PS2 disc support (the PS3 has PSOne disc support that works the same way as the PSOne download support), or it could be some crazy cloud computing database whereby you insert your PS2 disc (or buy the licence from PSN) and you are connected to a remote PS2 emulator where you play it over the net.

Ok the last one was far fetched but it proves the point that we know nothing about the context of this discussion...

OK, just to get things straight, first of all NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO BUY ANYTHING HERE...

Right, now onto other matters. When this says the PSN, everyone automatically assumes PS3. Now correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the PSP also have the PSN!? And doesn't the new PSP not have a UMD drive. So how about the entire PS2 back catalogue now available to play on the PSP.... Now that's something I'd be very interested in. And I would also like to pick up a few select PS2 titles for the PS3 that I didn't get first time around (Ratchet & Clank for starters...)

I hope this is true!

The source isn't this "Neogaf" website. The leaked doc was on SEGA's PR FTP site, which thousands of journalists have access to.

I sold my PS2 years before buying my shiny new PS3 and I have no problem with re-buying certain PS2 classics at all. If you really want to play PS2 games proper, simply buy a PS2. You can buy a PS2 for the price of an average game nowdays (if not much less). If this is true, it's great news tbh

now as mentioned a USB stick with the chip in it to allow all ps3s to play ps2 games would be fantastic im not sure if this is possible, but it gives customers the option if they want to buy it to play ps2 games on their ps3

Its ignorant to think Sony would ignore the PS2's 100 million consoles............................................................... They are selling the crap out of PS1 Games on the PS3 Network. Why would you think any different with the PS2?????

Firstly, as Redh3lix points out, the source of this may have been linked to on NeoGaf but the document was until recently available to anyone. NeoGaf was not the exclusive source.

Secondly, feel free to dismiss the whole thing if you like, CD, but we've got the document right here. We did give a 'reason' - take a look at the story again. Do a bit of research and I'm sure you could find it too!

since they removed BC i had a feeling we would see PS2 games on PSN, and there have been rumours about emulators etc for ages so this shouldn't be such a surprise.

if you have a catalogue of PS2 games, then i'd assume you own a PS2. is that right? so you can play the fricken games yeah? stop whining, PS is lucky not to have totally gone under over the last couple of years. if you weren't so tight and bought a PS3 with BC this wouldn't even be an issue. i did, and i may have paid more, but i can play WTF i like.

my only reservation is the pricing, if it's cheaper for me to buy a disc second hand than it is to download, i'd be more inclined to do that. but over all this is good news.
no PS2 games on PSP as only one analogue stick, BTW.

The lack of a second analog stick isn't the only reason this is unlikely to be for the PSP. It's pretty unlikely (read: practically impossible) that you could get a PSP to emulate a PS2. The PSP is probably about on par with a PS2, but it's not just a smaller version of the same hardware so it's not going to be powerful enough to emulate a PS2.

They did. Nobody bought it. People complained about the price. To drop the price, something had to give.

Sony never lied about giving anyone backwards compatibility. If you wanted it so much, you should have bought the system when you had the chance.
