So, what did we think of Gameswipe?

Viewer numbers for games-centric show outperform both Brooker’s Newswipe and Screenwipe; More episodes a possibility

It’s fair to say that the reaction from the industry to last night’s TV debut of Charlie Brooker’s Gameswipe was mixed. But if its intention was to offer an informed, reasoned and mature take on the games industry of both past and present, then it’s hard to regard the show as anything other than an overwhelming success.

Impressively, Gameswipe bettered the viewer numbers enjoyed by both of its higher-profile predecessors, with Charlie Brooker tweeting the following this morning:

“Caring about ratings is a terrible illness BUT Gameswipe easily outdid both Screen & News Wipe in terms of 'numbers' last night.”

Furthermore, Brooker has also hinted that the show may yet have a long-term future, stasting: “Dunno bout a series, wd maybe another one-off if asked. May now cover games in Screenwipe tho.”

We’d love to hear your opinions on the show – feel free to post your comments below. For a more in-depth look at MCV’s reaction, click here.

I enjoyed it. I would've preffered a more indepth look at the industry as a whole, but I thouroughly enjoyed his wit and the show in general.

It did seem like it was "video games for dummies" -- hopefully we'll get more episodes soon.

Am I the only one who thinks some of this content only furthered the harm done by adolescent teen stereotypes? Seriously that you tube video with the foreign nutter screaming I can smell there burning flesh, will not help the average gamer. We aren't all homicidal maniacs.

But those things/people DO exist. There are people that take it too seriously, or sound like nutters. Yes, they are a minority. By showing them it helps a) a show acknowledge they exist (because you can't whitewash away the fact that a lot of games are violent nonsense - because they are), and b) further's the comedy/satire angle, thus belittling them.

I don't hear the people in the media saying they were unfairly represented by this show - it just seems to be idiots on forums who thought Brooker was going to float down, wave his wand, deliver the games version of Top Gear and use video games to solve world peace.

Best show, sorry programme, I have ever seen about 'video' games. I thought it was brilliant, and the time flew by. Hats off to Charlie Brooker, he and his team did a brilliant job. More please.
PS where can I get 50p or Ten Bob merchandise, anyone know?

The show did cover a lot of ground that us seasoned gamers have already covered.

But.

It was a one-off - Brooker's hands were tied. It would've been foolish to structure the show as a current look aimed towards hardcore gamers as there's no following episodes.

So instead the show covered the past, focused mostly on gaming's lack of airtime and often bad perception and threw in a few funny moments. It was a fun and enjoyable, if ultimately pointless info-wise, one-off special on games.

Would REALLY like him to do a series, so that wit can be put towards a weekly focus.

Personally I thought it was very funny. Amusing in every way...The 50 Cent feature made me laugh and the I loved the Wolfenstein feature. Very well done, and exactly the sort of show that was needed.

i think some of you are taking the show too seriously....

it was a good laugh, a nice blast back in to the past and a reminder that not all of us - including "proper" gamers - want what the studios/publishers are pumping out, month after month.

some nice comments on the guys 'tash etc, adding some much needed texture and depth (storylines, not his 'tash).

hadn't seen fiddy' game before, what a load of tosh that is

and Mr O'leary was right on the money, as usual, when talking about publishers locking our content away behind a barrier we have no intention of climbing over, metaphorically speaking.

i think the programm got the mix pretty much spot-on, not sure though if any follow-ups would work so well...

I was only attacking the lack of support for good gamers. I know these people exist, it's just that the media will only concentrate on these sections. Comments from people like JP only exacerbate this. I would quite happily give the public top gear for gamers if the beeb would fund me. The image of video gamers needs to be changed because I am sick to death of defending something I love because of immature players and the effects of demonization they cause. Most of the program showed first person shooters and didn't concentrate enough on good quality gaming that doesn't involve looking from behind yet another gun. Has anyone tried innovative titles like flow, fat princess or echochrome and not felt that they hold the pure essence of gaming? Did fat princess need the blood? No. I'm not against violent games, I love the God Of War games but somewhere we have to show that we aren't gun toting maniacs.

has there ever been a gaming program that wasn't aimed at kids? not really. i can't think of one anyway.

in fact i've never seen a TV program about games that didn't make me wanna spew my ring, not withstanding those that were on when i was a child, i.e Gamesmaster (which would seriously suck balls these days).

i kinda like CHarlie Brooker anyway, seen him on the likes of Have I got News for You and he's not afraid to take the piss where necessary. personally i think there is so much about the games industry that need to have the piss taken because there's a lot of corporate spin and every press release is more like listening to a politician than somebody who genuinely gives a hoot about games.

there are a lot of despicable characters in the industry as well (Kotick, Pachter et al) and we need somebody in the mainstream media who will point this out.

not for many years have i looked forward to watching a TV program about games and the only reason this seems appealing is the fact it (if the other Wipes are anything to go by) is mature and irreverant.
however i wouldn't like this to be a weekly thing, we have other things these days like EBC and other online shows that are good given they're made by bone fide gamers who know their stuff.

one a month would be good enough for me, don't want this kinda thing to become too bloated.

"I am sick to death of defending something I love because of immature players and the effects of demonization they cause"

hopefully this means you'll f***off and die then. it's a part of gaming and we don't need to BS people with a media friendly and innaccurate image of gaming.

TBH if there was going to be any change in the general view of gaming, we'd have to stop calling it "gaming" as that immediately conjurs up a sense of immaturity.
we're not gonna tho, are we?
stop being weird and shit, or at least put your name down if you have any strength in you convictions.

While I'm not crying out for a full series of Gameswipe, hopefully the success of this will result in a new round of developments in the field of games TV- I think this has shown that you can get some success with putting games on the TV if you'll just put some effort in and do something a bit more than a stack of reviews that equate to "Well, the graffix is good, innit?", and I think the only way that's going to conceiveably fly is if there's more than one show on at a time.

tom, you want me to fuck off and die? What difference would it make to you if I did? Your too busy grooming 7 year olds whilst masturbating over a new gun game. I am part of a community of gamers who are decent towards each other and understand that games are meant to be fun. I don't want to sugar coat anything, I just want people to understand we're not all shut in a room plotting the deaths of our family. I like helping people and try to be a stand up member of society. It shocks people when they find out I am a gamer because they associate it with uneducated, immature low lives. That is what I want to change. So why don't you go join the klaus barbie movement somewhere in the middle of the U.S. so you not encouraging the stereotype

I was defending myself from an immature attack from an unhinged individual.
I was surprised you understood the klaus reference.
As for the sensitive disposition, "hopefully this means you'll fuck of and die"? You have a real way with people.
This is a site for industry followers not little children who like to "annihilate a small, middle american school"
I know that games are exactly that, Games. That wasn't the point I was trying to make.
Why are you so opposed to my comments against gameswipe? Are you really Charlie Brooker?
I used me right to give my opinion just as you did. However mine was never personal nor was it intended to offend, Just stir up the debate based on my opinions.
You however act like Charlie Brooker Mrs and wade in with an attack that can only be compared to an american politician finding oil in a middle eastern country.
So in a nut shell, You didn't upset me, You just proved my point. The mistake I made was I retaliated, But then I'm sure you would do the same if someone told you to fuck off and die.
If this was a conversation in a store it would never have reached this point because your still hiding behind a false identity where no-one can see you.
I'm tired of the type of responses I read on forums like the one you gave.
Get out more. I find time and have a wonderful life in and out of the games industry.

Have never found Mr Brooker particularly funny, so didn't make any effort to tune in.

Maybe I'm the only one that watched it, but BBC Scotland had a video-game show for adults called 'Video Gaiden' which was rather good, but finshed last year after three series. Key ingredient, the people in it seemed to care about games, something I imagine would have been lacking in Brookers piece regardless how much research he put in.

I thought that, as usual, Charlton did a superb job. There were some salutory points from Dara O'Briain and Graham Linehan, and I too would love to see the industry evelove away from these problems. I'd now like to see Charlie Brooker deconstruct the processes and ingrained habits of production and commissioning of games in the same way he has done for TV. As an erstwhile video game designer, I'd watch his material on Screenwipe regarding the horrors that occur behind the sets on TV, and think to myself (or shout it at whoever was nearby at the time) that it was exactly the same in our industry.

To...err, Tim?

Having now watched it, i thought it was quite good. it was probably the best games orientated show i've seen, but i have to say that generally they are all shit so there's not much competition.

i'd like to see this quality of show hit the mainstream more as it's pretty accurate, although i do think that if Dara couldn't be bothered to get past the Berserker, or indeed that it's a she and not a he, he can't be that much of a core gamer. never mind, he's too busy being funny to play games that much i guess, and he did have a point anyway.

Linehan, however, was on the money. if there is an issue with gaming having an immature reputation that's because there is a distinct lack of mature content. and please don't confuse adult with mature. if a book is deemed to be suitable to be read at degree level or higher then it may have content that would perhaps be too complex for a younger audience. not necessarily sex, crime or violence, but social, political or perhaps psycological issues (or some shit, init) that requires a mature mind.

until these kinda games exist then gaming will never shake off the guns and acne, emotionally retarded image, and frankly it doesn't deserve to.

like some bloke said, we need our Citizen Cain. However, whether or not the much touted Heavy Rain will be that game remains to be seen.

all in all, Gameswipe: best of a bad bunch.

HAH you two are hilarious. You were both so caught up in your attempt to usurp each other's point of view that you didn't realize that both of you were by default defeating the stereotype due to an excessive use of intellect, otherwise thought, by the non-gaming general public, to escape gamers.
