UK CHARTS: FIFA 10 is new No.1

EA's mega-franchise sells huge numbers to become one of the biggest releases in history

There's little surprise in this morning's weekly games charts - FIFA 10 is number one.

In fact, the game has turned into one of the biggest releases ever. It has shifted hundreds of thousdans of copies in just three days on sale, no doubt thanks in part to aggressive price cutting at supermarkets.

It's the biggest launch for a FIFA game ever, and the second biggest in UK history. It's beaten only by GTAIV's release from last year. According to Chart-Track 48 per cent of sales were on 360, 46 per cent were on PS3 and the rest on other formats.

Elsewhere in the charts, Professor Layton and Pandora's Box holds on to second place in the charts, while Halo 3: ODST moves down to third.

The Top 10 is as follows:

1. FIFA 10
2. Professor Layton and Pandora's Box
3. Halo 3: ODST
4. Need For Speed: Shift
5. Wii Sports Resort
6. Guitar Hero 5
7. MySims Agents
8. Colin McRae Dirt 2
9. Mario Kart Wii
10. Batman Arkham Asylum

Not suprised?

Can anyone in the industry tell me roughly how much profit Game make per copy of Fifa 10 at £39.99? I'm talking after their own overheads too.

Also, do you think Tesco etc made a loss in selling Fifa 10 so cheaply? I understand about loss leaders and all that so don;t need it explaining, I just wanted an opinion on whether Fifa 10 was a loss leader for them or not.

I hope they do it with MW2.

No, Henry - indie sales (and not all of them at that) are counted by a different organisation (Complete EPOS) which doesn't contribute to Chart-Track data, I believe.

Same Every year fifa is discounted by supermarkets on goes to number one for one week.

After Call of Duty or Modern Warfare the EA does a deal with Game Gamestation and HMV to allow them to reduce the sale Price to £19.99 everywhere then it can contend for the number one spot

Will be good to see how many Fifa 10 sells at the normal price of £39.99

Fifa isn't a one week jobby my friend. Fifa sells shed loads up until christmas at least, And regardless whether supermarkets sold this cheap or not, it would STILL be number one.

I agree with Jimothy.

It will still sell loads, even if its number 1 or not. of course EA are going to apply some pressure to keep it there or there abouts in the run up to xmas etc.

Die hards and fans will always be the first to purchase it then like other triple A product the late adopters will get in on the act and the followers and me too'ers.

Its a good game for parents to get their footie mad kids etc. price will go up to 'normal' then there will be some discounting, it happens, we should try and live with it.

Henry, your arrogance combined with your obvious pride in ripping off conaumers is all the evidence people need to see the indies are out of touch with the current market place and the very consumers that feed it.

Oh, and if any CHIPS employess are listening in youve got a bloody cheek whinging about supermarket pricing when you charge £45 on pretty much all your new titles.

JB - The SRP on Games is actually £49.99 therefore Chips are selling this £5 below the SRP given by Games publishers. Yes, most of retail sell at £39.99 but this means that margins are extremely thin.

All Chips are doing is selling to make a profit. What Cads!

Supermarkets made a massive loss on this release over the weekend. If you go into your local Asda, Morrisons, Tesco's now you'll have to pay circa £38.

Please stop posting your dumb ass comments and give your head wand a rest

I actually said most of retail will be circa £39.99 and supermarkets a little cheaper.

Its up to Chips what they retail at. Simply pointing out the SRP's the publishers work to.
