US: PSPgo raises PSP sales by 300%

Launch of new handheld drives hardware sales, PSN revenue

The launch of the PSPgo has tripled Sony’s handheld sales in the US, and doubled the number of downloads made for the format.

SCEA exec Patrick Seybold told Kotaku that three days after the device’s debut, the firm’s “top retail partners” reported a 300 per cent increase in PSP hardware sales  when compared to previous week.

He also said the launch had prompted a “significant increase in revenue for PlayStation Network, driven by a 200 per cent life in PSP game downloads purchased from PlayStation Store”.

The new handheld, supported by download-only games, has proven to be controversial with several UK retailers expressing their reservations, with other international outlets in territories, such as Australia and Holland, refusing to stock it.

I hope that SOny will in time pass on those profits back to consumers with smart price points for download games on the network. I understand full price when the game comes out but they have to realign their prices with retail once the games have been out for a while as they are still significantly cheaper on the high street.

So they're selling 300% PSPgo's than they we're selling PSP's. That'll be 3 a week now then.
