Subscription TV service goes live with 24 channels on Microsoft’s next-gen console
Sky’s long-awaited Xbox Live IPTV service has gone live in the UK, meaning that Xbox 360 owners are now able to access satellite TV without the need for a dish.
The service, which launches with 24 available channels, requires Xbox Live Gold membership to use. The monthly subscription charge for non-Sky customers is £15.
Additional bundles including the likes of Sky Sports and Sky Movies are available for an additional fee. A Sky Player Retail Bundle, priced at £29.99, should also be available from today and includes a media remote, three months Xbox Live Gold subscription and a one month subscription to the Sky Player.
Alongside the standard Sky Player features that users of the internet-based service will be familiar with, 360 owners will have the additional option of entering Avatar Party Mode, where their digital selves can be seen interactive with Avatars of other users in the party.
“Today our customers enjoy film, music, videos and games on Xbox 360 and TV is another significant step forward in our entertainment vision,” Microsoft UK’s senior director of Entertainment and Devices Neil Thompson stated.

“And now Xbox owners will have the variety and volume of entertainment along with unique services such as the avatar community which allow you to share, celebrate and chat – it is clear that Xbox 360 is taking entertainment beyond the living room with unique social interactive entertainment experiences.”

could be good...
I think where this could be useful is if you don't already have sky and would like to subscribe to sky sports/movies for example on the odd occasion.
Otherwise it works out about the same price as subscribing to skys basic package, so why not just get sky?
Pointless
It's as expensive as Sky proper, it comes with fewer channels, and you have to stream abd buffer content, so completely useless for people on a connection less than 6-8mbps.
What a waste of time and money.
Xbox
As a PS3 owner, if this service DIDN’T require a Gold LIVE subscription, I would go out and purchase an XBox 360 right now. I was looking at Sky multiroom, but this seems a better idea, if only for that damn LIVE business.
LIVE doesn’t offer me anything I want or require or what my PS3 doesn’t already offer me for free, thus I refuse to pay to go online when I already pay my internet service provider.
Sounds like a good service though if your already a Sky/LIVE subscriber though.
Too expensive
I wont be getting this as its more expensive than normal Sky. With the Gold subscription required also its just not worth the money.
missing the point
Think some people are missing the point if you already have Sky and already are a Gold XBL member then this service is FREE! I for one can not wait to get home and down load this service Sky player on my Xbox and Iplayer on my PS3 how can you go wrong?
it's not "FREE!"
"if you already have Sky and already are a Gold XBL member then this service is FREE!"
no it's not, it just means you are alraedy paying for both services. if you have Sky already, why do you need it on your Xbox? maybe i am missing the point.
and where as there is no extra charge for the Iplayer, which i use more than the actual channels on my TV, i do still pay the licence fee so it's by no means free.
@Tom
Some people have their Xbox in another room to the Sky Box, hence the reason why you would do this, say you want to watch the football, but your Mrs wants to watch something on Sky one, this would resolve this issue. It is not pointless.
No Dish?
Think about people in rented accomodation who aren't allowed to install a dish (like me). This is a life saver for those individuals who want the latest Simpsons shows and a broader selection of premium TV.
My only question is...HD?
Sky Subscription
You can have up to 4 xboxs in different rooms playing the sky player which negates the need for multi room subcriptions from sky (this sounds like Sky has shot themselves in the foot but what the hell I'm not complaining) so I have my main sky box downstairs with my full subscription and my son has his sky player/Xbox upstairs in his room and my daughter has her sky/xbox in her room, and I can watch Footie in my room on my xbox if the wife wants to watch a chick flick downstairs all without the need of extra dish cables and the like. so not bad. HOWEVER....should we all decide to watch something all at the same time unless you have a Virgin media cable 20mb broadband connection (which I don't anymore) the entire system grinds to a halt resulting in crappy buffering time and much frustration on my part. also as of 15:30 today (27th of Oct) it don't work right now anyway. lol. so if you have cable broadband it's the Dogs dangly bits, but if you have BT broadband/ Sky broadband and can only manage a crappy 4mb connection because of their crappy phone line exchange it's POINTLESS. That is all.
Facts first peeps
I sugest you google the reviews on it before saying it will be rubbish as it runs with 2mb speed!
Also there are people out there who have dedicated "gaming rooms" like myself so getting the footie in there while the missus watches corrie are major +ss
If you have full sky package and live gold ive seen it is free as stated in one of the reviews.
I'm happy!
Get what you pay for
@ Redh3lix
You say that xbox LIVE is a rip off because you have to pay for the year a wopping £40 oohhh or less if you shop around. Lets face it mate you get what you pay for..!! I have both consoles and I love them both but XB LIVE is worth every penny the whole experience is much greater than the PS3 and now we have Sky as an option..!!! Gets my vote :-)
And I suggest.....
@Hybrid 666
I suggest you read my entire post rather than the last couple of lines.
I am with Sky broadband and have an Xbox live account and I have downloaded the player and I do think it is a valuble service because, AS STATED IN MY POST, it negate the need for Sky multi room subscriptions as you can connect up to 4 xbox live accounts to a single Sky subscription. Very handy. HOWEVER although the minimum connection speed needed for the service is 2mb if you have a connection speed lower than roughly 10mb your Buffering speed will be so low it is pointless even trying (by the way THIS information is directly from the Sky broadband techs themselves, great thing this primary information stuff eh? ) So to make it clear for those just reading this line and the next, if you have a good 10 to 20mb braodband connection (Virgin Media say) this service saves you money in regards to getting a multiroom subcription from sky. there, clear enough?
WTF
@ MadJock and i was obviously reffering to you wasn't it!? none of the negative ones :s
I posted as fan boys knocking it as its on 360! if you google the Mirrors review it was very positive mine works fine on 4mb speed im happy with it!
not free for current customers
ive got gold and sky, i browsed the internet and it says if you dont have multi room sky you have to pay an additional fee to watch as it would damage skys multi room deal, so its not free for ordinary customers
Is Free to current customers
"Tezz"
As far as I can tell (and I admit Sky/MS have not made this very clear if you have XBL Gold and Sky then you get to use the SKY Player functions of the system, That’s to say you can watch programs that have already aired on SKY. I.e. Catch Up. If you want to watch LIVE Programs then you will need to spend £5 extra. I would think this is to protect the revenue from multi room.
Straight From The Horses Mouth
I hope this helps to clear things up.
"Sky's Director of On Demand Griff Parry, Xbox's Jerry Johnson and Neil Thompson and Adrian Pilkington of BSkyB"
"To watch Sky Player on Xbox 360, customers will need an Xbox LIVE Gold membership," explains Sky.
"Non–Sky satellite customers will also require a monthly subscription which starts at £15 per month to Sky Player's Base Entertainment Pack. Customers who want to watch Sky Sports 1, 2, 3 and Xtra, ESPN and the Sky Movies channels will be able to add these channels to their Base Entertainment Pack for an additional cost. In addition to the live channels, customers will also have access to on-demand programmes from channels they subscribe to.
"Existing Sky customers with Xbox Live Gold membership will be able to access Sky Player's on-demand content in line with the channels they are able to access through their core Sky TV subscription. Customers with Sky Multiroom or Sky Broadband Unlimited subscriptions are additionally able to access live channels for no extra charge."
