Modern Warfare 2 – price roundup

Get the game for as little as £9.99 as price wars and trade-in deals swamp UK High Street

Remember the anger expressed by gamers when Activision announced that it was going to charge £54.99 for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 back in July? Well forget it – from midnight tonight gamers will be able to pick up the anticipated FPS for a fraction of the RRP.

Sainsbury’s will be leading the charge with an astonishing off-the-shelf price of £26, but there are plenty of outlets who will be fighting for consumer’s money tomorrow. Here’s a roundup of who’s doing what:

* Sainsbury’s – £26
* Asda – £32
* Tesco – £37.90 (or £25 when bought with another chart game)
* HMV – £9.99 when either Forza 3, Tekken 6 or Uncharted 2 are traded in
* GAME – £25 off when the first Modern Warfare is traded in
* Blockbuster – £44.99 (or £19.99 when a ‘selected game’ traded in)
* Morrisons – Unknown

And here's a look at some of the online prices:

* Amazon – £43.99 (PS3/360) and £34.96 (PC)
* Game.co.uk – £44.99 (PS3/360) and £34.99 (PC)
* Gamestation.co.uk – £44.99 (PS3/360) and £34.99 (PC)
* Play.com – £44.99 (PS3/360) and £34.99 (PC)
* Simplygames.co.uk – £46.79 (PS3/360) and £35.79 (PC)
* Zavvi.co.uk – £44.95 (PS3/360) and £34.95 (PC)

Good for consumers, bad for Indies

I've cancelled my Tescos pre-order which I had at £35.97 in order to pick it up from Sainsburys at this ridiculously cheap price. As a consumer I'm extremely happy but it doesn't stopo me feeling sorry for the Indies who will inevitably lose sales because of this

"Indies who will inevitably lose sales because of this"

No, they will simply buy MW2 from the supermarkets at the cut price, and resell from their store, as it will be cheaper than paying acti directly.

I would bet my left bollock that Sainsburys has a 1 copy per customer rule for this game to stop people doing exactly that.

1 per customer

The good thing about the Sainsbury's deal is that it is strictly one per customer, which was not the case in Tesco or Asda with other titles. It stops people eBaying or indies buying up all of the stock. The Sainsbury's near me is not even that big, but they have around 80 copies of each (or at least that is what they told me on the phone), so plenty to go around for all of those that get there when they open.

Another win-win situation for the consumer and therefore good for the industry.

Just seen elsewhere that Sainsburys aren't that cheap after all. It is £20 in Makro.

Terrible for the industry

@simsini: Please don't make misleading comments that this is good for the industry. This is a terrible downward spiral which devalues games and will put many developers out of business.

I'm an independent retailer who has recived his stock from c/s for £40.90 inc vat to make an honest living i would like to sell at £49.99 but i have no chance of that as i have a sainsburys & asda on my door step so i sit & wait and hopefully they sell out then i can sell my stock. unfortuantly that then gives the impression that i am ripping everyone off and this has a knock on effect to all other releases so i think one more christmas and i'll pack it in before i get into debt thanks.

whats the problem...? market forces will dictate the level price of this game.....if i buy a car and sell it at cost,but also sell a stereo to the buyer at a profit....am i a smart operator or am i shrewd..? leave sainsburys alone....!

Performed my first ever midnight purchase of a game at £37.70. Definitely the last time I'm doing that. Would rather just pay £44.99 to avoid the hassle :/
