Natal launch details leak from secret Microsoft tour

November 2010 release, 5m units global ship, 14 games, and super-low sub-£50 price

MCV can this week reveal first details regarding the launch of Microsoft's Project Natal.

Our sources say the innovative controller-free 360 camera will be released worldwide in November 2010.

This and other details have emerged following a behind-closed-doors Microsoft tour of UK publishers and studios – the format-holder has been demoing the tech and detailing its 2010 plans in order to spur more development support.

Microsoft is planning to manufacture 5m units for day one release, with a mix of console and camera plus solus SKUs expected.

The device should cost under £50 when sold solo. One publishing source says Microsoft is “trying to get as close as possible to ‘impulse buy’”. Another even says the camera could even retail for just £30.

14 games are being readied for launch.

Natal was unveiled earlier this year at E3 in Los Angeles. The device uses an array of cameras and microphones to track player movements.

Activision, Bethesda, Capcom, Disney, EA, Konami, MTV, Namco Bandai, Sega, Square Enix, THQ and Ubisoft all committed to make games for the device in an announcement made at last month's Tokyo Game Show.

It’s expected a large chunk of launch games will be first-party offerings from studios such as Rare with third-party games to follow. It is not known if Lionhead’s widely-discussed Milo, which uses advanced AI to create realistic characters, will be in the mix.

Natal will arrive almost five years to the day after the Xbox 360 and is perceived by many, Microsoft included, as a way to lengthen the lifespan of the hardware without resorting to a new console launch. The first Xbox was sold in the UK for only three years before 360 hit.

This summer Xbox studios boss Phil Spencer told MCV the 360 still ‘hasn't peaked’.

“When Natal arrives it will feel like a new generation has come,” he said. “I see it like the launch of 360 in November ‘05. Consumers don’t want another $400 box right now.”

Sony has said it will launch PS3’s motion-sensing wand peripheral – movement of which is tracked by the already-available PlayStation Eye camera – before Microsoft’s kit in spring 2010. However, so far the Japanese firm has kept details of the launch closely under wraps.

From what I've heard the tech seems pretty much sorted, why another year of wait? I assume a lot has to do with them wanting a big batch of games for the same time.

Can't argue with the price, I'd pay three times that.

I think the November 2010 wait is probably a cautious "post-cred crunch-maximise-sales-strategy" perhaps. That, and the fact it gives the chance for 1st and 3rd party peeps to get their "creative minds" round it and release something half-decent for it. Only good thing I can take for that is that this current gen will have at least another year out of it. What say you lot? 2011 for next gen announcements followed by new consoles in 2012 (lets hope the Mayans are wrong, really want to finish the Mass Effect trilogy before the apocalypse lol)?
FAST-FORWARD TO XMAS 2010:

Woodins: "It puts the lotion on, or it gets the hose again . . . . . "

Milo: "I don't understand . . . . . Would you like to go fishing instead?"

LOL.

More interested what Natal can do for operating systems and errr, certain channels of the adult entertainment industry lol.

A November date makes sense for all kinds of reasons.

It's five years after 360 launch, it's smack in the middle of Q4, gives a decent amount of time post-E3 2010 for promotion, etc.

There's also a good chance Microsoft is holding out as long as it can so that component costs get low enough to hit that £30 price point.

Has MCV turned into Spong now? Releasing any non-story it can get its hands on and having no consideration for the developer/publisher/platform holder?

What with this and that dreadful piece on the new MOH (which, incidentally, EA had already said they were 'updating' - it doesn't take an 'inside source' to see that it's going 'modern'), I'll be looking elsewhere for my trade news.

We've had the MOH story for weeks - it's just duff timing that meant we were pipped by EA's own financials.

That said, we do take on any constructive comments from genuine industry readers, so thanks for the feedback.

Just a question.

Will Natal games ONLY work if you have Natal, or are they being built to also work with a traditional pad?

A bit of both, I would have thought. We'll (almost) certainly have Natal-specific titles where the camera is needed, but I'm sure many games will offer the choice of Natal or pad.

Are you the same person that ask if PS3 games can be played in a PS2?!

It will go that some old games will work with the new tech but if you could do it with a pad its not Natal....

Oh and no you cant play it on a PS3

...if it happens! People moan about the price for extra's but look how popular Rock Band and the like are. If people want it it'll sell, as long as Microsoft supply the games I'm sure it'll fly off the shelfs. I'm sure the price will scare Sony also! I'm guessing the so far untitled 'Sony Wand' will cost at least £79.

All in all next year should be a cracker.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop MCV.

It's good that they're going to sell the camera/controller way below cost, but it will create an entirely different demographic then they're used to. When Microsoft pushes for hard hitting titles like Halo and Gears of War, they do great. When they push for 'casual titles', they fail miserably.

Treating the launch of a camera peripheral is not the same as a traditional hardware launch, and they need to stop deluding themselves. Wii has already absorbed a majority of the motion-sensing fans, and PS3 has a motion sensing controller coming out even before them (and with far more promising results).

Re: Different demographic - it certainly is. There are rumoured to be hybrid-games where you could for example duck whilst using the regular controller or motion to throw a hand-grenade again whilst otherwise playing a regular shoot em up.

It's not a motion controller - it's a depth-vision camera, it does facial recognition and voice recognition as well. This is extremely complicated - the Wii motion sensing is not a technical innovation per se, although it's popular. I don't know what the PS3 motion sensing device is but if it's as you describe then the experience suggests just an iteration of the Wii - where are the promising results btw?

It wil change gaming

Natal WILL change gaming. There comes a time when someone comes along with something new and it happens. Things changes. The Iphone is a perfect example. Everybody and their mother is now coming up with a touch screen mobile device. And there's enough of the market to go around.

I think even if the Wii hadn't come out, this Natal tech would have still come out. Given the popularity of the Wii, MS and Natal will be building on what the Wii has done (or has not), but taking it many steps beyond, by using much more powerful hardware and a way more in-depth vision technology. The Wii does not do facial and voice recognition nor does it capture the depth of view. Natal is has multiple cameras, motion sensors, and a microphone. It has a custom processor running proprietary software, which provides full-body 3D motion under any lighting conditions. It recognizes facial expressions and emotions. Wii nor the Itoy do nothing like this.

Project Natal IS much more and will change gaming.

Natal = 'multimedia on CDROM'

posted by Joe Nov 11, 2009 at 7:51 pm

Joe

The BOM for 'Natal' will be much less than £50, since the hardware contains only one unique part (the camera that records distances rather than colours at each pixel), and even that is cheap to build. MS could seek to either make an obscene profit per peripheral sold, or to make the peripheral universally popular, but not both.

The real problem is that the new 'eyetoy' is every bit as useless a gimmick as the previous camera based novelties. The tech is flakey, and will give sub-optimal results under most ordinary conditions. Real motion capture uses perfect lighting in custom studios with special clothing, and multiple expensive cameras. The pros do not work this way because they are stupid, or made of money. To the contrary, the best researchers design the motion capture rigs of the pro-studios.

MS is trying to jump of the Wii bandwagon, plain and simple- not recognising that Nintendo's success is pure brand and marketing. MS is not a family gaming brand, and never will be- the 360 is just another generic platform to play non-MS software that could just as easily run on another brand of console, or on the PC/Mac (if available for those platforms).

MS is failing to advance its core biz (Office and Windows), but has a mountain of cash to waste on bluesky projects, like 'Natal'. The last time MS acted so stupid was when it sank billions into 'multimedia on CDROM', claiming that this tech, not the Internet, would be the wave of the future. The focus on CDROM was the reason MS was so late entering the Internet market, and the reason that MS had to play catch-up with respect to Internet browsers.

Story

For all we know this could have all been made up on hyptheses and guesses and rumour. No way is this going to go on sale for below £50, if their crappy webcam was like £25 at launch (sorry, can't remember exact price).

I reckon this is going to be $79.99 in the states plus tax, then £69.99 here as an RRP.

MS just love to rip people off. The camera may not be that technical if a lot of it is just hardware and software. It all depends on resolution and what kind of things they are packing into the device.

This is just an opinion, as credible as this story

Actually, this story IS highly credible. A colleague passed on similar details to me on Monday. I'm impressed MCV caught wind of it all so quick to be honest!

Usually, I know Microsoft would react badly to this kind of info making it out so early. But it wouldn't surprise me if this time it would be pleased. General consensus about the cost and Microsoft's own excitement for the Natal camera proves that a lot of people in the industry are looking forward to its arrival.

(I work at one of the top 5 publishers in the world, BTW.)

the camera is not like 3d stereoscopic studio capture, it's a gated IR array + web cam + mic array, probably with a processor on board. the camera will probably be subsidised to get the technology into our homes, and the games sold in the wave will quickly recoup the subsidy.
just guessing though - it'd be great to have it launched at E3, but it needs to be polished i guess.

Why would a webcam delay a new console?

I mean wouldn't offering upgradable hardware do just as well? It's not really been done for a console for years now, the world has learnt the mistakes from the 32X, so why not? it'd still be a cheaper alternative to a new console.
