Activision reckons new Call of Duty has beat all previous first and five-day entertainment industry records
It just can’t stop breaking records! Publisher Activision Blizzard has announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sold-through a staggering $550m in its first five days on sale.
The company believes that this is the best five-day launch in the history of entertainment – including video games, cinema and books. Previous entertainment highlights include film due Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($394m) and The Dark Knight ($203.8m).
In addition, Microsoft has confirmed some impressive Xbox Live numbers. On the first day of release alone over 5.2m multiplayer hours were logged in the game, with over 2.2m unique gamers having a go – the latter being a new Xbox Live record.
Over 11m Achievements were unlocked in the game in the first 24 hours.
“In just five days of sell through Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the largest entertainment launch in history and a pop culture phenomenon,” Activision CEO Bobby Kotick stated.
“The title's success redefines entertainment as millions of consumers have chosen to play Modern Warfare 2 at unprecedented levels rather than engage in other forms of media.”

problem is
i wont buy the next one, its just a slight improvement on 4 and im bored of it already, nothing new, nothing fresh,
COD6
I only bought this game because i knew everyone would be playing it, not because i think its that great.
delay
Since the price hike I've been distinctly put off this.
There is a swathe of AAA first person shooter titles out there, among which Left4Dead, Fallout 3, Armed Assault 2 (Operation Flashpoint 2 gets the proverbial boycott) I have yet to play. For example, I've been too busy with Team Fortress 2, Bioshock, and Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway to consider this latest Call of Duty installment. There is also Crysis and Far Cry 2 to add.
Not to mention there is Borderlands the FPS-RPG hybrid which has got great reviews and has a unique style. Also, id's Rage approaches soon, as does Rebellion's Alien versus Predator, and another Gerbox title Aliens: Colonial Marines.
I feel like I've hardly worn out Battlefield 2 (well yeah.. I suppose it's having its curtain call) and Call of Duty 4.
Equal respect and time is given to all quality developers, but slapping another £10 onto even the PC version does not warrant me rushing out to the shops to buy it. It's a matter of principle, I for one think it's a cynical ploy and will wait till it's half price or on offer.
AWESOME!!!!
I am astonished w/how much money this game has made in 5 days worldwide. That is amazing. I love this game! I'm a huge FAN!!!!! :)
re: delay
andrew get a life or a job
YAWWWWN!!!!
SEGA....bring back Virtua Cop ! Now , that is what I call a shooter
re: re: delay
"andrew get a life or a job"
LOL
Chrysis
Also bring back Nights (but not on Wii) and bring back Kolibri. There simply aren't enough 3rd person humming bird based shooters out there.
Amazing
This beats all FPS hands down. Theres so much depth to the online multiplayer, and no other game has anything anywhere near the standard of special operations.
same old
Okay first things first. yes the game is pretty theres no denying that.
Yes its fun theres no denying that.
But with the same tried and tested techniques put to use in the old modern warfare is it really such a huge leap forward?
Not really... New maps a few new weapons and some updates on the perk system is all it really has to offer.
Lets be honest no matter what i write here its going to be overlooked thanks to the media hype. I hope all the MW2 zealots enjoy playing it while i stick to Left For Dead.
Yes before anyone says it i have played the game and thought 7 hours to finish the campaign was pretty lame. It is seriously aimed at the online community but with the ability to have a party chat not being available (which is a thing of beauty to mature gamers) enjoy being screamed and shouted at by Americans and Teenagers.
re: Simon
Thanks for you concern Simon and constructive input.
I take it you are a COD fanboy.
Sorry for punching you in your pussy :)
Actually, I just worked my arse off in the summer working for a well-known developer and am now back at uni... doing my third year of Game Design and Production Management.
What exactly are you doing, out of interest?
OWNED
lol ouch Simon
I am sorry bro but you just got EPIC PWNED
And btw I am not a COD fanboy but i love this game cause i never tried the COD 4
re: OWNED
OH SNAP EPIC PWNAGE
Party CHat
Theres a kink in the no part chat system, i know because i hate the screaming teenagers too. However if you just select private chat and invite your XBL friends it works even in game.
MW2 RULES
COD FOR LIFE COD 4 IS DUMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Me
I like call of duty. Do you?
All hail MW2
I am not a gamer at all. I grabbed the controller from my brother, and haven't given it back in 6 months. What an addictive game! I rock now, I get my AC130 out in the first minute of every match I play. Thanks Activision for giving me something to do while my daughter naps. I would like to get some of that COD profit too, lol.
