US: PS3 sales up 70% in October

Whilst PSN downloads increase 60% compared to the same month in 2008

In news that may well mark the moment that PS3 finally turned the corner, Sony has announced that North American sales of the console for October are up 70 per cent compared to the same month in 2008.

Also significantly up year-on-year are downloads from PSN, with October seeing more revenue generated from the download portal than any other month to date. In total 650m pieces of content have been downloaded to date, with the number of registered users passing 31m.

“Many believe a console race is a 100-meter dash, but it’s really a marathon,” analyst Jesse Divnich if EEDAR stated.

“PS3’s growth in recent months is a perfect example of how a new low price along with upcoming innovative, exclusive titles such as MAG, Gran Turismo 5 and God of War III, will act as large catalysts for driving the PS3’s install base even higher.

“Add in the robust offerings on the PlayStation Network and there’s no doubt that PS3’s success will continue well throughout 2010, and beyond.”

It's good to hear some positive feedback from the Sony camp, they deserve some! The PSN store, in my eyes, is far better than the xbox marketplace, the whole PS3 interface has a more professional, adult feel to it. Next year should be interesting for everyone.

PS3 FTW, however, it's still got a long way to go before it even catches up with the 360 with regards to install base and Sony are still reporting huge losses. i'm sure PS3 will cream it next year, just look at the releases in Q1 alone, and the "fact" that the 2 highest scoring PS exclusives according to Metacritic (sorry to spin stats, i know they're hardly gosple) have been released in the last 2 mnths (uncharted 2 and GOW collection) and outscore the highest Xbox exclusive, which is from 2006. the momentum is very deffinately with Sony. however as long as LIVE continues to dominate PSN, Sony have they're work cut out for themselves.

still, there's a long way to go yet and you'd be a dick to write off Xbox just yet. GAME ON!
