AUSTRALIA: Attorney-general seeks MW2 ban

Infinity Ward's game 'awards terrorism,' says political figure

South Australian attorney-general Michael Atkinson is to appeal against Modern Warfare 2's 15+ rating in the country.

Atkinson accused the Australian classification board (OFLC) of trying to 'get games under the radar' on a national radio program, and called it's decision to approve Modern Warfare 2  'wrong'.

He later told Gamespot in a statement:

“I worry about any game that encourages gamers to perpetrate extreme violence and cruelty on screen, but this game [Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2] allows players to be virtual terrorists and gain points by massacring civilians. Expecting game designers to be responsible by not glorifying terrorism will always lead to disappointment."

Australia currently does not have an 18+ rating for games, which means any title that doesn't receive a 15+ or below is effectively banned from sale in the country.

Atkinson needs to check his "facts" before commenting

The Attorney-General obviously hasn't played the game otherwise he'd realize there's no point-system, outside of the multiplayer, in which to even gain points. Plus, to the best of my knowledge, until SWAT arrives, whether you shoot anyone or not, the Airport level ends exactly the same way.

@Hugo Your correct. There are no points and you don't need to shoot the civilians in order to pass the level. Some good general info on the R18+ issue over at www.growupaustralia.com

Michael Atkinson is a constant campaigner against videogames and an R18 rating in Australia, despite over 95% of people voting for an R18 system in various polls.

His opinions are generally full of factual flaws.
