NOA president discusses Wii dominance over ‘primary’ female console owners

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime claims 9 million female gamers regularly play on their Wii.

He also estimated that this represents 80 per cent of the 11 million female ‘primary players’ around the world, according to Kotaku.

During his presentation at BMO Capital Markets Digital Entertainment Conference, he explained that ‘primary players’ are the main users of home consoles – and does not include casual or non-gamers, such as young girls with a DS or mums on casual PC games.

He said: “This didn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of a deliberate attempt to expand the market.”

...with rubbish games that have little or no effort put into the making of them. Soon enough we'll have the market flooded with crappy games that stupid people keep buying...

Oh wait.

I'll stick to my 360 Elite thanks......I'm off to kick some arse on CODMW2, followed by a bit of ACII I think.

I would consider myself lucky to date a girl that enjoys playing video games and if Nintendo helps increase those numbers then all the power to them.

I've encoutered my fair share of women that find gaming completely useless. This is changing rather quickly as video games go from a nerdy passtime to the cool thing to do.

If not for Darkside Chronicles and Twilight Princess, I'd sell my Wii and stick with my 360. If my gender are happy playing with their shitty 'Fashion Botique' games then go right ahead, but don't lump all female gamers into that group.

Most of my female friends that I'd consider as 'primary players' play their 360s or PS3s more than their Wiis (if they even own one) so those statistics aren't ringing true to me.

PirateVal, I applaud you and your friends' love of hardcore games consoles but you are definitely in the minority. I know many women who play DS, Wii and PC casual games but who have no interest in first person shooters, RPGs or other core games on Xbox 360 or PS3. In fact I don't know any women who own an Xbox 360 or PS3, but I know plenty who do not want their other half to own one! I hope this changes.

He didn't, he estimated (i.e. guessed) it represented 80% (i.e. not 100%) of all female gamers.

I love how female gamers have to be so insecure and defensive, and quote male oriented games as some kind of denial of their femininity.

Stereotypical? Nah... cliché'd? You betcha.

And how bizarre that my security words are "several" and "strands" when we're talking about girl gamers... how hairdresser like. ;)
