System becomes fastest-selling console in territory’s history
Nintendo’s Wii has become the fastest-selling home console in the history of the UK, surpassing six million sales after just three years on the market.
According to GfK-ChartTrack upweighted data, the console hit the milestone in week 48 this year – exactly two years and 51 weeks after it went on sale.
The console was given a boost by the launch of the black Wii in mid-November.
“Wii launched in December, 2006 and sold 185,000 in just a few weeks,” explained GfK-ChartTrack director Dorian Bloch.
“In calendar year 2007, it sold 1.81 million – but really took off in 2008, with 2.73 million sold. So far in 2009, it’s hit 1.31 million – but it’s got a few weeks to build on that before Christmas.”
The Wii still has some way to go to catch the UK’s best-selling console of all time, which at last count was Sony’s PS2. The system has sold through a whopping 10 million units to date.

10M
Great accomplishment, but what a fall this year (mirroring America, Japan etc.). Ten million is at least 2 1/2 years off.
Still going strong
The Wii sold ridiculous numbers last year.
It's gone from that back to selling exceptionally high numbers this year. I'm sure Nintendo isn't losing any sleep over sales - especially compared to Sony and in particular Microsoft.
Hope to see Nintendo dominate all throughout next year as well.
10m HA!!
10m??? never gonna happen, this TOY will have to be replaced by a wii HD within 2 years as even V-tech can replicate Nintendo's hardware and motion tech.
And what with the future PS3 motion games and the 360's project natal (which will be FAR superior to the wii) this fad of a machine will be obsolete soon
Fad?
How many times have we had this "fad" line?
You might as well say the whole console market is a fad.
blah blah
not sure if the Wii will make it passed the PS2 but only because there's more competition these days. could be proved wrong of course. there's more interest in gaming in general these days.
although anyone defending the Wii has to remember they haev Ant and Dec endorsing the product, so really all Wiis should be burnt and we should give our children better roles models.
6M in 3 years = 2M PA (of course), lower demand these days than those years but it would still take 2 years of sustained demand. Hmmmmmm. i think your mans right that there'll be a new Wii before too long, the specs are pretty mediocre and we'll see an increase in PS3 demand and 360 will stablize. i reckon anyway.
despite being the "worst" outta the big 3 it's still gonna win the numbers game.
PS2
THe main reason the PS2 is so darn hard to catch up to is no one's really bought into the PS3 until this year. Next year the PS3 will start to get a lot more respect, but up to this point it's gone from market leader to the third place.
Still a great machine and I adore mine, it's just that for most people the wii is more fun and better value for money so it's a no brainer to get that first.
