US marketing boss John Koller says Sony’s motion controller will trump Microsoft’s and Nintendo’s efforts
Ahead of the year that will see all three platform holders take to the motion-control battleground, Sony America’s head of PlayStation marketing John Koller has boldly predicted that neither Nintendo’s existing Wii or Microsoft’s upcoming Natal will be able to match Sony’s ambitions in the merging tech space.
“Quite honestly, I think Project Natal and the Wii are going to have trouble matching, from a differentiation standpoint,” he told GamePro.
“We look at motion control as being that much more than what exists on the market. The Holy Grail of gaming is placing you as a consumer into the game physically.
“When we provide further details, people will see exactly where we're going, not only from a technological standpoint on the hardware, but also where the gameplay is transitioning. It's going to be a really exciting launch.
“In terms of the best types of games, I'd say that right now we're looking a real wide variety of genres that can utilize the technology. I think the areas that are going to be really critical to our success will be family games, as well as shooters and sports games.”

Fighting talk from Sony?
Well this is a first (for a while anyway).
I'd like to know how many consumers are excited about the Wand & Natal, personally from what I've seen I'm not to bothered with it. 2010 should be an interesting year though!

Yeah, I seem to remember something similar being said in the context of console sales when the PS3 was launched.
Keep believing your own words Mr Koller, I don't see many people getting excited about your glorified 'eyetoy dildo' wand
House
alright mr. 'i dont like new things because i dont like change' house.
and as for that said about ps3 console sales, alot has changed.
i.e. the ps3 has started to build momentum.
jump on board the playstation wagon. its not too late even for you naysayers. and even you mr. house
Comfy sofa and pad plx
There's a reason all those Wii's sat under your TV's are gathering dust. :D
hmm
well i would like to see both motion controllers in a real demo situaton, rather than smoke and mirrors like E3s nataly scripted presentation,
could be good, but essentially both companies want a slice of nintendos causal market and to be honest the wii does gather dust and you wont sell that many units of casual motion games, plus these casual customers only casually walk into your shop twice or 3 times a year
Good Luck
I wish Sony well with this.. .
. . .But I can't help felling its just Make Believe
Arrgh
Feeling, Dammit, Feeling . .
. . .But I can't help feeling its just Make Believe
Dam Dam Dam
Arrrrggggghhhh
Damn, Dammit, Damn..

Damn Damn Damn
'eyetoy dildo' wand
LOL.
goodbye wii
as soon as either natal or the wand is released the wii will dtop ogg completely, after all its just a gamecube with motion sensors..
Don't believe the hype
"and as for that said about ps3 console sales, alot has changed.
Not really... after the all too brief "growth spurt" following the price-drop, things are back business as usual: PS3 once again takes the last position in both hardware and software sales...
"i.e. the ps3 has started to build momentum."
Riiigghtt... so much momentum that it lost the November sales race to both Microsoft and Nintendo even after moving 440,000 units on Black Friday?? So, how's that Sony kool-aid? Tasty? What flavor 're you guzzling?
Looks like a dildo..
Well considering Sony are MATCHING the Wii with this Wand, i'd hope MS would be looking to BETTER the new era of motion controllers. MS are already one step ahead so I don't see where Sony are coming from with this comment?. They are just creating a Mii too add on for the PS3!?...
@Dez
"i.e. the ps3 has started to build momentum."
It's been available for over two and a half years and it's only starting to build momentum? That is not descriptive of a successful product.
hhhhhmmm!
I can't believe it... Well i don't doubt Sony's promist really- Natal will probably brake down after a couple of days after it's released! And even hardcore Nintendo fans aren't happy with the amount of family/party games on the Wii!
I wish Sony best of luck really, and 2010 is going to be a good year for gaming- so everyone should be excited!!!
?
Using your hands? That's like a babies toy! :D
??
I'm a crack shot at this!
LOVE IT!!

Personally I do think it's a good move for gamers. The wii had good gameplay and the controllers had potential, but it was held back by its lack of power, and resulted in far too many low quality games being made to fit.
Potentially, with these motion controllers, the PS3 is assimilating those elements the wii had, with the PS3's existing capabilities.
Of course, this isnt a new concept, it's just a sony-brand wiimote... But then again the Natal isnt a new concept either, it's just a Microsoft-brand EyeToy.
I do think the wii will be forced out of the mainstream market if the PS3 controllers take off (which I expect they will, dependant on price), but it should be an interesting time for development once the 360 and PS3 hit a stalemate
