Pirates claim PS3 hack success

Pirates claim PS3 hack success

Hackers claim to have found way to play copied software on Sony’s previously impervious console

With piracy rife in the Wii, Xbox 360, DS and PSP markets, the PS3 has to date proved the only current-gen machine to successfully fend off the hackers – but it seems that things could be about to change.

According to reports on Maxconsole, a lengthy and convoluted workaround has been discovered that allows users to play pirated copies of Killzone 2, PES 2008 and Burnout Paradise.

Users are also required to have an older PS3 (i.e. not a ‘Slim’ machine) onto which third party OS software can be installed as well as copies of Windows XP, the original MotorStorm and a host of piracy-related DVD software.

The exploit, however, has been met with widespread scepticism amongst many in the hacker community, not least because of the extreme cost and effort needed to implement it.

Even if the hack is real, any detrimental effects are likely to be minimal for now. The fear, however, is that this method could be the start of full-fledged hacking of Sony’s console.

Doesn't sound like it'll make a huge difference if it only works on the older PS3 models and is then hard and expensive to do.

you need. a very old PS3 model. one which is very rare and much better than current models.
a copy of Windows Xp. an OS which will never see on a store shelf and which nobody will probably ever be selling. i doubt you'll even find a torrent for that.
a copy of motorstorm. an old game which you will have to hunt down.
and alot of piracy stuff more to go along with that.
OH dont forget. you need a blu-ray burner and equipment.
i HAVE all this stuff. except for the piracy equipment. but i would rather keep my PS2 compatible Launch Unit with me.
this will NOT spread. and it wont bring rise to much more.

Not to worry Sony.

They said the user needs a old ps3 model, so where to get one?
A user will have to shell out more money just to buy a old model and shell out more money just to mod it.

I have an old console still going strong good old 60 gb got it when it was realesed! Which means I could get one of those chips. But I don't see the point it's stealing and ruining buisness for the games industry and we all love games :D It's only those xbox people that hack games because they are too poor to buy a game, thats why they have £140 xbox :D

So they need a console that will inevitably suffer the YLOD, an old game and some soft/hardware. If anyone wants to buy my D.O.R 60Gb and Motorstorm for a fair price, I'll sell! LOL

well we all seem to be agreed that there's little point in pirating the software as above, but i'm sure it'll be done eventually. still, i quite rarely buy games anyway so i don't see the point in potentially ruining my fat old PS3 for the sake of a couple of games. with that in mind however, i still don't know how i'm gonna afford all these Q1 releases!

About time. Anyone in australia paying $120 for a ps3 game is crazy. So many games out there that people want to play but can't buy them all so they are missing out on awesome titles. Waiting for The price to go down is gonna be 2 years and that's gonna set you back 50. I have a 360 which I only bought so I can "back up" games. I'm not missing out on titles, have not been banned online and spend like 10 bucks for a game. It's really worth it. I don't have the money to buy and play all the games I want. PS3 gamers are missing out.

Let's face it... piracy makes consoles popular! It leads to bigger numbers because of high demand raised from being able to play any game you want. This is true with the PS2, Wii and both Xboxes.

Not so true on the PSP for some reason (although it was hacked to bits), but I still think that a hacked PS3 will cause console sales to spike... maybe not game sales, but definitely console sales!

BTT, I have everything needed except for a BluRay burner, but I ain't doing that to my baby!

Cool! I have an old, fat, launch day PS3. One of those that "will inevitably suffer the YLOD"... Inevitably. Gosh. I have it running 1 or 2 hours a day, for 2 (3?) years straight... and it never even crashed.

But I suspect you're right. "Inevitably" it will burn. I doubt it will work in 2040 (though my PS1 still works. And my ZX Spectrum, 30 years later).

Still, great news. I don't care about piracy. I care about selling my old and fat PS3 for a $hitload of money!!!

Gotta love pirates.

Piracy has always been a major factor in the success of sony's hardware.
Lets hope this is true; for sony's sake.

hardware/software

but don't they make more money off software than off hardware? i thought that was how they justified selling the units at a loss. so despite a spike in hardware wouldn't that just be counter productive, selling hardware at a loss only not to make money on software.
i suppose when the hardware becomes profitable then maybe, but it's gonna be ages before Sony make back everything they have lost so far on the PS3, and i believe that despite the price drop they're still lossin money on the actuall hardware. i'm sure the lack of piracy is attractive to devs as well. either way, they haven't craked it yet. the process outlined above is ludicrous, although i'm sure it's an inevitablity.

PS3's hardware is too advanced for theese idiot pirates to hack into. Xbox 360 was built with last - gen technology, which is why pirates have a field day with it. A 3 year - old could hack the 360's insides. PS3 hasn't been hacked yet and probably never will be.

Win XP

Windows XP? This "hack" sounds a bit fishy to me. It says that you need a PS3 that is capable of installing a third party OS and that you need Windows XP. Windows XP is made for the x86/x86_64 CPU architectures, not PPC. Windows XP cannot be natively run on the PS3 without the use of a PPC OS like Linux and an emulator like QEMU. Doing this has nothing to do with hacking, so I have no idea why this would be a requirement.

Typical $ony Tactics

This is totally in keeping with Sony's typical tactics. They routinely make promises, and don't keep them; offer some really neat feature, then when everyone in Japan has it, pulls the feature from the market. They are also notorious for putting out versions of games only for the Japanese market (remember Ultima?). After paying so much for my PS3, and being disappointed in the range of games available, lack of updating favorite older games (why exactly can/will Sony not rework the graphics and animations for Final Fantasy 7, my all time favorite game from Squaresoft)... etc, etc, etc...
I will never buy another Sony Playstation console. In fact, I may just refrain from buying any new console. I have a total of five games for the PS3, which cost me nearly half what the console cost. I think the games are mostly over rated and too expensive.

Of course, this is just my opinion; I could be wrong.
