Mass Effect 2 sales top 2m

Xbox 360 and PC RPG sequel gets off to an intergalactic start, according to internal EA figures

Publisher EA has confirmed that, according to internal estimates, Mass Effect 2 has already sold over 2m copies worldwide. It was released in the US on Tuesday and hit UK retail today.

The game currently boasts a Metacritic average of 96 per cent, making it the second highest rated Xbox 360 game of all time behind Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto IV.

“Mass Effect 2 has earned 40 perfect scores, amassed over 30 editor’s choice awards and is donning the front cover of 20 magazines worldwide,” an EA statement read.

“On launch day, the term ‘Mass Effect’ was in the top ten trending topics on Twitter and most searched on Google News.”

Co-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka of developer BioWare added: “Mass Effect 2 is poised to be one of the biggest games of 2010. We could not be more proud of the game’s universal acclaim and early commercial success.”

I loved the original Mass Effect and pre-ordered its much anticipated sequel from Gamestation, of course, it was the stunning collectors edition of the game that I ordered.

Thus far, Gamestation have failed to meet my order and are either unable or unwilling to do so which means that I am going to miss out on one of the greatest gaming experiences of all time! Thanks Gamestation, I don't know if I'll be shopping with you again.

The stunning collector's edition. High praise for something you've not even laid your hands on yet.

I shall not be buying ME2. ME was grossly overrated for a game with so many firefights in it and a truly awful team based shooting mechanic. Nothing I've read about ME2 has mentioned any improvement on this, yet still it scores 'perfect'.

It sounds like another case of a 'story' for sci-fi nuts, interspersed with some very average gaming.

Bold stance there, guy. I'm sure your one-man boycott has Bioware shaking in their little booties.

ME2 is all about improvement. They've ironed out every issue from the original game and delivered an absolutely masterful experience that tops every similar product with ease. If you can't dig it, it's your loss.

It's not a stance, I just felt misled by the original reviews and bought a very average game. Once bitten twice shy.

Bioware have another success, fair play to them. I'm just not buying into it this time.

Shipped is not the same as sold

This information is not correct. Mass Effect 2 has NOT sold 2 million units. The publisher has SHIPPED 2 million units. If some of those units don't sell, individual products will be returned for credit or will get a price reduction.

For example GTA IV supposedly shipped 2 million units too. But a month after release I saw it in a shop (and bought it) for £14.95 ($25), not in a bargain bucket or anything, just a price reduction because they shipped more than they sold.

So remember, a game isn't sold until you and I go into a store or go to Steam or Amazon and lay our money down. It is NOT when a publisher ships units to distributors and retailers!

That's not correct. EA figures estimate 2m SALES of the game. EA has not quoted any figures regarding shipping.
