PES 2011 “needs to change its concept”

Konami promising most drastic overhaul yet for struggling football series

Some may claim that they’ve heard it all before, but developer Konami has again pledged that the next version of its Pro Evolution Soccer series will feature a radical gameplay overhaul.

Speaking to Famitsu (as reported by Andriasang), the series’ lead developer Shingo ‘Seabass’ Takatsuka noted that the last release, PES 2010, came in for some harsh criticism – particularly in Europe – and promises that PES 2011 will be “powered up many levels”.

“Winning Eleven [as the series is known in Japan] games until now, he said, have been just extensions of the Famicom era,” Andriasang reports. “Players were fine with this through the PS2, but the development staff now need to change their concepts and ideas to something more appropriate for the new generation machines like Xbox 360 and PS3.”

Konami has previously been open about the trouble it has experienced in trying to keep PES up to speed with modern sports games and has actively sought the feedback of the game's users. Takatsuka has openly expressed his admiration of the FIFA game engine, going as far as to admit that given the chance to use EA’s tech he would “think about it really seriously”.

While PES still enjoys a strong following in Japan, EA claimed late last year that its FIFA 10 has outsold Konami’s PES 2010 by a ratio of four-to-one worldwide.

Indeed, there was once a time when the latest PES release would be a year-round fixture in the UK Top Ten. At the time of writing PES 2010 sits at 23rd in the ELSPA GfK-ChartTrack All Formats Top 40.

That’s slightly better than at the same stage in 2009, when it occupied 26th. However, in the same week in 2007, PES 6 sat at number four. PES 5 was sitting at number three in the charts at the same stage in 2006.

Fifa outselling PES is normal and it happens every year, even during PES3-4-5-6. EA being too fond of it does not change the fact their game is boring. I've been buying Fifa games since Fifa '94. Yes it has improved, but still no where near Konami's fabulous still "Famicom-ish" game. If we do have an overhaul, finally, I can see EA's game light years behind.

Fifa had loads of bugs last year, none made it into the reviews - huh. PES had some minor bugs - all made it into the reviews. Both are great games yet the reviews are soo biased its untrue. Face it Konami it doesnt matter what you do, Fifa will always sell more. I look forward to the yearly "I have always played PES, but somewhere along the way something happend". Nothing happened, PES is the same for the first two iterations per console generation. Its only on the third you notice the difference. It took them 5 revisions on the PS2 to get it right!

I really don't think it's about biased reviews, it's simple, FIFA is moving forward, and as you say "PES is the same", that's the problem. It's not moving forward in the ways FIFA is, i.e multiplayer etc.

The majority of people buy based on reviews. Biased reviews dont help the situtation - and are at best dishonest. Fifa has/had numerous bugs, that is not moving forward. It plays an OK game, but so does PES. Online is better on this revision of PES, Offline with your friends, PES is the better game. Fifa has alot of gloss but at the end of the day, both need to up their game. Neither is a 90% game imho but both can offer quality entertainment. The difference is minimal.

Last years PES sucked a big one. Only the fanboys in full blinker mode say otherwise. FIFA 10 was leaps and bounds ahead. PES needs a massive overhaul to be anywhere close.

FACT - I used to be the biggest PES fanboy going. Played them endlessly with epic sessions both alone and with friends. I wouldn't even sniff at a copy of Fifa, except for Road to World Cup during the height of the '98 campaign. But times change and there's no doubting that Fifa have been the finer football games over the last 3 years. Even my blatant favouritism towards PES couldn't cloud how obvious this was. It finally looks like Konami have recognised how far behind they are - in fact, the comment says it all, "the development staff now need to change their concepts and ideas to something more appropriate for the new generation machines like Xbox 360 and PS3.” .. they still consider this a new, exciting generation that they haven't gotten to grips with yet, rather than being comfortable with it like EA are with Fifa. It's going to take something drastic to turn this battle back into PES's favour..but they are capable. For now, Fifa rules the football stakes. And if EA put more effort into their manager mode, which is already arguably on par with PES's staple "master league", it could be curtains for PES.

First things first, I have been reading comments made by Seabass and his Konami team saying they will change and improve PES, and surprise surprise, the game is still exactly the same since the next gen consoles came out. Nothing has significantly changed.

In my opinion I think Konami used improvements on the Graphics and master league mode ("YOU CAN NOW USE CURRENCY") to pull the wall over our eyes, nothing has changed. The fact that you can now use currency to buy players instead of points in the master league mode is not something to get really excited about. That was something Konami should have done 8 years ago.

The problem with seabass and his team mates is they have a major problem listenning to fans. I've been to so many PES forums and fans of the franchise keep saying they want the gameplay improved and when they say this, they make reference to PES 5&6 BECAUSE PES 5&6 are the greates football game in existence to date.

This statement made by seabass and konami and the deception of PES 2010 of tells me that PES 2011 will be no different. Get ready for another dissapointing year by konami guys. I guess there will be no football game for me and my mates come october.

I have been so disappointed with this years pro. the payer movement looks very generic and the dribbling system is really terrible. Player decisions are laboured and reaction to passes or loose balls is still shambolic.

I love pro so it hurt to say this was not a good game

As far as i see it, PES 2010 had huge potential but it was wasted on things like strategic implants and not on the game play itself, it is still two dimensional and has many in game faults. Disappointing

i dont know if yu have seen the 2010 world cup game where you can actually see the managers on the sidelines and they look realistic PES should attempt that. Also, the english premier league and spanish la liga shud be fully licensed, those are the two most popular leagues around right now.

Before I used to be a pro addict when I was younger but of recent I have been very disappointed due to the game play and the absence of both registered kits and logos for clubs and countries and the bundesliga. Look at many of the players faces especially afrikaans terrible. A change must come this years edition 2011.

Every Year they say the same line "drastic overhaul" and it's the same crap game. the dev's NEED to play the old Pro Evo's and take it back to basics. It seems to me like they are trying to make a user friendly game(like Fifa) instead of a Football sim.

At the moment I own only FIFA games, I've been looking at PES and it seems like the game is much better because of it's features such as Master League and Become a Legend, FIFA games tend to get boring because the same commentary is used so much, it's predictable. However, I never see advertisements from PES, if you compare KONAMI and EA, EA promote themselves everywhere! To be honest I'm sick and tired of FIFA, I want something new!

Easy steps to success

FIFA 10 was a better game than PES2010, and that's really saying something. I found FIFA 1O shallow and boring. But PES2010 was unplayable - too many random elements, and passing was nigh on impossible.

These games seem to be striving for 'realism' which isn't necessarily a good thing. Yes, it is realistic that a player misplaces a pass, but if it's going to happen, I want it to be because I made the mistake, not because the AI did! The quest for realistic scenarios has taken control away from the player, which defeats the whole purpose of a video game.

I could make PES2011 an improvement on the series with a few simple steps:

1) Take PES6
2) Upgrade the audio/visual
3) Increase the game modes, eg. online Master League
4) Reintroduce the Option File for editing, consolidating all the editing into one single file and allowing players to share their files like in the good old days

Forget 360 dribbling. Forget licenses. Forget fancy animations. And don't even think about brining in this touted 'players moaning affecting form of team mates' BS, otherwise you might as well just put the controller down and watch the game instead.

Tbh neither Pes nor Fifa are close to the perfect football experience, Pes lacks annimations and atmosphere, while Fifa has atmosphere but rubbish football, scripted goals and a defence thats always on the half way line. Honestly Fifa needs the passing and Pes needs the atmosphere from commentary and such like, although Pes faces are great to watch. Oh and Fifa manager mode is rubbish i mean buying top players for 5 mill.

Movement in PES 2010

PES 2010 is really good when compared to FIFA..
Positive things in PES 2010 :
1.Looks realistic..everything like players,ground,game play.
Negative things in PES 2010
1.Movement.Every player looks so stiff and their movement looks funny, the way they move really funny..
FIFA 2010..
movement is good but i feel like fighting rather than playing !!..frustrating game.Doesn't look realistic ...One thing i like is the way the players move to get the passing ball..!
The main difference what i felt between both games ..
When you play PES 2010 you feel like playing real football but while playing FIFA you feel like playing a normal video game..I hope you understood !!
