Switzerland pursues violent games ban

Possibility of stricter measures after resolution passed restricting sale to minors

With violent games currently causing a stir in Australia, closer to home it has emerged that Switzerland is now considering banning violent video games outright in the territory.

A resolution restricting the sale of mature games to minors has already been passed unopposed, according to Gamesmarkt, and will be now be presented in parliament.

It illegalises the purchase of any game not carrying a PEGI age rating and requires stricter rules on the requirements of ID, although both of these measures had previously been voluntarily introduced by retailers late last year.

However, more worrying is a second resolution that was passed – albeit with a split vote of nine-to-three – that could lead to an outright ban of violent and adult titles in the country.

The Swiss Law Commission is currently inviting input on the issue from retail and industry bodies before this also heads to government.

95 per cent of Swiss games retailers are in favour of a form of self-regulation and voluntary restrictions – but as has been seen elsewhere, it is expected that some will campaign for an outright ban.

No. Just no. Let them personally ensure the titles don't get sold to underages, but banning them will cause trouble. I guarantee it.

Yay for requiring ID. I mean, every time you want to purchase something that might possibly be construed as vaguely dodgy if at some time in the future you possibly might so much as contemplate going postal, why, we need the paper trail to prove it!

People are just getting tired of all the violence, sex, and inane garbage thrown at them these days. It's getting really boring. We wan't content, quality -- substance. It's about time we took our heads out of the current garbage can full of rubbish being force fed us and demand better.
As far as "banning them will cause trouble", I don't think so. Most people are thinking: "Wow, a country is actually doing something right for a change.... What a concept!"

Dude, that's just your opinion. And with no evidence, it is just so much silage in the trough.

Who is to say your biased value judgment re "garbage can full of rubbish" is any more valid than the opinion of any adult Swiss of voting age?

Your argument, or more properly its basis, contains more holes than a fine Jarlsberg - and is completely unstable and insubstantial as a result.

Shame on you. Shame.

So where does this end. If they can ban violent games, why not violent movies and tv. Why not boxing or other related violent sports. Violent Books/comics. To single out games is ridiculous. Why stop at violence. How about sex related media. Lets just ban everything that might be offensive. Why are they even thinking of banning this in the first place? Is it supposed to stop all violent crime from happening??

Hysterical, vilifying mothers councils are loving every second of this. And taking notes for the witch hunts to come in their own countries.

Banning is bad, period

Violence, sex, crude language and other elements that may prevent a game from getting a PEGI rating are just arbitrary choices of elements "some people don't like". None of these are actually damaging or otherwise merit banning. But if the PEGI refuses to rate a game, it's banned.

Banning child pornography, racism, antisemitism, etc. from games is in line with standing law. If it's not allowed in everyday interaction (with the possible functional exceptions, like for politics or journalism) and it shouldn't be allowed in games either, even though some might argue that (some of) these should be generally allowed as well. That's not the point here.

Allowing people to ban whatever a group does not wish to see is an invitation of banning homosexual characters in games, banning female avatars in pants or skirts of lengths above the knee, banning the portrayal of mixed race relationships and banning the mention of Allah altogether.

This ban is pure fascism.

Time from law passing to first Swiss person buying a game from abroad via Ebay?

About five seconds, methinks.

The article doesn't say why Switzerland is pushing this resolution. Did they notice an increase in violent crimes among gamers? Or did they just want to censor their own countries gaming habits? Personally i dont' understand why they'd want to limit themselves like this; censorship laws don't make sense to me. Just another pointless legislation that'll take more away from their country than it gives back.

To: Dude
Banning games because you don't like their style is pretty stupid. If people actually want less violence and sex (aka excitement) in games, then don't buy them, and the game sales will reflect this. Based on CoD:MW2 and ME2 game sales, this simply is not the case. Violence and sex sell.

Also, "force fed"? Games are expensive, and gaming systems even moreso. No one is forced anything, we persue our "rubbish" at incredible expense.

All this will do is force gamers to resort to piracy to play those titles if they can't buy them. This solves nothing and creates more problems.

For anybody interested, this passed through parliament yesterday. It's going to be a law.

Oh well....one more reason to buy games from the UK.
