247 job losses as chain shuts 12 GAMEs, six Gamestations and all 25 Debenhams concessions
The GAME Group has announced that it is to close 43 of its outlets owing to the “the tougher market conditions that it faces in 2010”.
In total, 12 GAME stores, six Gamestation stores and all 25 of its Debenhams concessions will cease trading. The result will be 247 redundancies. Most closures will be in situations where outlets are situated close to one another.
“We are committed to evolving our business to make sure it operates as efficiently as possible while consistently delivering the high standards of service our customers demand,” a statement released to Edge Online reads.
“We regularly review our entire store portfolio, including our concessions, to maximise the opportunities to reach customers while also ensuring that the business is running as effectively as possible.
“As a result of this review process, and the tougher market conditions that we face in 2010, we have announced our intention to close 12 Game stores, 6 Gamestation stores, and all 25 of our concessions in Debenhams stores. In each location, we have detailed plans to support the customers and employees.
“The majority of the identified sites are located close to another one of our stores, and we will help each customer affected by a closure to transfer to their nearest store as well as our online offerings.
“We will provide extensive support to the teams in each store. However, with deep regret, we have had to offer redundancy to 247 employees. We will do our utmost to redeploy roles if possible, and have started consulting with all affected employees in the 43 sites.
“We are very focused on supporting our people, and thank them for their continued hard work and understanding.

GAME
i have worked for GAME for a few years now...every single memeber of staff who work at GAME so de-motivated by all the changes going on, cutting hours, closing stores, Head Office are not willing to listen to whats going on in there own stores, and are they have there head buried in the sand....its gonna get worse..
@ J & him
"Game" Like them or loath them, it's not the company that suffers, it's the people who loose their jobs.
Show a little respect.
Suprise suprise!!!
Wow shocking news, out of the blue! I think not, its been on the cards for months, head office moans and excuses, poor customer service and purchase experience, company failing to move with the times - that's what happens when the accountants take over, the passionate ones are moved out!
@ Darron
Cheers Darron. I am one of said employees. Yeah I hate GAME as much as the next man, but at the end of the day its a job. Everyone needs money. The other thing is that whether my shop has closed or not GAME are gonna continue dowto make their money. Im just a number to them at the end of the day but I'm the one that has to try find a new job at one of the worst possible times.
Alot of people have families and mortages and now because of this things are going to be really tough for them unless they get something else.
Cheers again for being level headed Darron, much appreciated.

No I will not, how many indies lost their livelihood over the years, 1000's and who gave respect to one my close friends who lost his house after losing his shops due to GS opening's/silly prices please don't say they are not competitive they are enough to damage any indie.
Too many stores?
I think the problem with GAME is they over expanded and went mad, I visited the Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield recently and there were 2 GAME's and a Gamestation in there, each unit most likly paying an enormous amount in rent and keeping any genuine competition out. Likewise in my home city (Leicester) there is a GAME in the main Highcross shopping centre, and just across the corridor, a Debenhams, with a GAME concession, then there is a third GAME just outside said shopping centre, then to top it all off, a Gamestation further up the road, thats FOUR branches within a short walking distance of each other. Even TESCO do not put that many stores that close together.
Unfortunatly it is the employees of these stores who loose out in the end.

@ Martin
without a doubt mate. They should have never bought over Gamestation. They were too afraid of competition and competition is always good because it gives the customers choice. The people sitting in the offices dont care about that though. It wont be too long till its all mail order anyway with the way things are going.
Oi!
Grr. People posting with my (admittedly somewhat ambiguous alias).
I used to work for GAME in one of the larger shops that was very close to a Debenhams concession and occasionally put a few hours in there when they were short-staffed. It's a damn shame when any jobs are lost, as the individuals that make the organisation function on a day-to-day basis that suffer the most. I hope everyone who is made redundant from these cuts finds new work soon.

If your any good at your job, you will always find work in retail, yes it may take you a few weeks or even months but its not hard if you try. When younger I worked in a newsagents, fruit & veg stall, butchers, car sales and clothing as well as a long time in the games industry. If you have the spark - your employable, if not consider retraining - either way, good luck.
