Doctor Who Wii game IS real

October release scheduled with Koch handling sales and marketing in the UK, MCV understands

MCV can confirm that the Doctor Who title for the Wii rumoured to be in the works by The Sun this morning is real.

Furthermore, it will be released in the UK this October with Koch Media handling sales and marketing duties, though when asked by MCV the firm declined to comment.

The Sun reports that the game is based around new Doctor Matt Smith and will include appearances from classic villains such as the Daleks, Cybermen and Silurians.

The paper quotes an ‘insider’ as saying: “This has been in the pipeline for years. We're delighted to have finally nailed down a deal. We went with Nintendo as they have huge appeal for families and Doctor Who is very much a family brand.

“The Wii console is key for us as it's something families play together.”

The news follows MCV’s exclusive reveal in January that BBC Worldwide is working on producing an ‘array of new games’ based on the lucrative sci-fi licence.

Head of multimedia development at BBC Worldwide Dave Anderson said at the time: “We’re having a lot of interesting discussions for a variety of ideas around Doctor Who that are complementary to each rather than in competition with each other – boxed product console games, virtual worlds and other experiences.

“The deals we are looking at are in different spaces, probably looking at overlapping but different audiences and are certainly delivering a different kind of experience.”

Nintendo-developed?

This is only a story if Nintendo are developing. If not, I expect this to be another example of knocked-up shovelware.

Jeez Matt, you are negative!

but you are probably right too...

I can see those Supermarket dump-bins and second hand baskets filling up quickly with an eerie hue of blue...

they will need a fecking Tardis to hide all the over-stocks...

agree with the first comment, we were thinking that if we only had mario kart, wii fit, just dance, super mario, zelda on the shelf that would pretty much be ok for the wii section & koch dealing with this game oh no, well forget it, our sales rep knows less than my grandma about nintendo products

Well done Koch, seems that small traders (with small minds) have infiltrated the forum. If you got this deal then you have gold on your hands. As a major retailer I appreciate quality product. Well done.

This is the BBC, they never plan anything long term and this is their first foray into gaming proper. They haven't given enough time for development, hence why there is no chance to release any current HD formats, so only the Wii. Wait for the success or lack of it for Wii, next season may have an HD format on the back of it after the BBC have dipped their toes in the water.

Point and Click?

Here's hoping it's not as bad as Destiny of the Doctors. Really, I think a Doctor Who game in general is probably a bad idea, aside from a few flash mini games like the ones on the BBC website. I just don't see the Technical Pacifist Doctor working well with the common video game tropes; i.e. Kung Fu Fighting, Wanton Destruction and a serious love for the 2nd Amendment to name a few. But I do see him working perfectly in a Point and Click Adventure a la Curse of Monkey Island and Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People; picking up and using items and gadgets from different time periods and alien worlds, using that vast intellect to solve problems, dialog choices featuring that classic british wit... It seems like it should go together like Chocolate and Peanut Butter.

A nintendo dw game will simply suck and only appeal to kids who find the sarah jane adventures scary. I can promise you that the wii version will have bad graphics and gameplay will fail. The ds version might be fun with mini touch screen games but an xbox version would beat to death the ds.
An xbox version would have full gorgeous 3d graphics and the xbox's superior processors would let you free realm in a sandbox style / inter time warp / mass effect 1 and 2 game.
Quite simply don't kill dw and make an xbox game

'Family brand'?!

WHO is a brand, but the last 5 years had family unfriendly things like burping wheelie bins, farting frogs, threesomes jokes, more obvious x-rated jokes... it's about a family-friendly as the brothel shown in "Family Guy".

Technically, it is a brand, but was the show openly referred to as just another "brand" prior to 2005?

I think it could work out great as an rpg. Given the Doctor's technical know how, we could get a lot of great puzzles to work through when the Doctor has to put some gizmo together to save the day. Maybe you have to make some hard choices that effect the outcome of the game. Maybe one out come brings you to the point of regenerating. The possibilities are endless, but I think the game would be really good on the pc rather than the Wii since imo the thing smacks of being a pc type game. The specs don't have to be outlandish, but I'd personally love to see it on pc, but alas. I may have to get a Wii to play it if it's good.

People have been waiting for years for this game to come out.
The NINDENDO company done a £10,Million deal with the BBC , so will this be expensive ? I think it will be round about £40 or more .

I agree that the 11th Doctor lends itself to a point and click adventure, which might very well be using the Wiimote.

If we want to have them to make kick-butt, kung-fu fighting Doctor game, then they should make a game with Pertwee's Doctor:)

But what a shame - if you want Lara Croft type games then great - this is for you. If you want something to think about - do a xWord
