Bungie on PS3: All options are open

Bungie has yet again refused to rule out future projects appearing on the PS3, stating that its options are open” and reiterating that it will develop for whatever platforms it feels best suit its ambitions.

In terms of platform, I know these things are all still pending topics in the studio,” community manager Brian Jarrard told IndustryGamers. We definitely have plans in the works, and I think we’re really close to understanding of what is next and who, what, when, where, that’s all going to land.

But we’re not looking at one particular piece of technology right now. All options are open right now, so long as we find the best possible fit for our creative vision and what this project is going to be.”

In the same interview Jarrard admitted that Microsoft’s control of the Halo IP is a source of sadness for the studio, though it did concede that the Master Chief would likely not be the global figure he is without the help of the platform holder.

The whole deal with Microsoft getting Bungie hinged on Halo – I don’t think that acquisition would have gone through if Bungie had demanded that they maintain ownership of the IP,” he added.

Certainly, there’s friction as you mentioned but that ship already sailed back in 1999 when Microsoft took control of the IP. In a hypothetical world, I’m sure Bungie would have loved to have had more control over that. Is it our expertise to know how to really manage an IP of the magnitude?

Going back in time that wouldn’t have been a core competency of our studio and might have detracted from our ability to make great games, but it’s certainly food for thought going forward as we look towards our next big chapter in the history of Bungie, and our next big project.”
