CEO Ben Feder says even sure-fire hits can fail on handheld due to illegal downloads
Rampant piracy is the real reason for GTA: Chinatown Wars’ slow sales according to Take-Two CEO Ben Feder.
On paper, Chinatown Wars should have been a massive success when it launched on the Nintendo DS a year ago.
GTA remains one of the most successful game franchises of all time, while DS is the biggest selling games console every released.
Chinatown Wars was a critical hit – on Metacritic it is currently the highest-rated Nintendo DS game to date and the second-highest rated PSP game.
However, this potential didn’t translate to sales over the last 12 months – leading many to speculate about whether mature-rated games can succeed on the DS.
But speaking to MCV, Take-Two boss Feder has cited piracy and the weak demand for handheld software as the reasons behind the game’s disappointing performance.
“I am very proud of Chinatown Wars,” said Feder.
“As of February 2010, Chinatown Wars’ unit sales in the US represented nearly 50 per cent of the unit sales of all M-rated DS titles in the history of the platform.
“At the same time, the handheld market is currently challenged by weak demand and by piracy. Piracy is a real and present danger for our industry and must be addressed, especially in the handheld market. The commercial performance of Chinatown Wars has certainly suffered at the hands of piracy.”
However, it isn’t all bad news for Chinatown Wars.
The game has flourished on direct download channels. It recently launched on iPhone and iPod Touch and became the top grossing game on the App Store. And a version for Apple’s iPad – which launches this month – seems a given.

lol
i could have told you that before you released it, what you need to do is release a false torrent of a new game that damages your firmware/console or bricks the console, so all the r4s and other devices stop working, someone needs to take a bold step and so far Nintendo are doing nothing, too high on their money piles to care i woudl guess, the wii is also seriously hacked its a joke
What a surprise...
"what you need to do is release a false torrent of a new game that damages your firmware/console or bricks the console"
What a great idea... then crooks like you can take back the faulty consoles to somewhere you didn't buy them from, and abuse the system.... what a hypocrite.
I think the fact that MCV still let crooks like you post on here speaks volumes about this site. Good job I'm not able to post comments at the moment eh?... Oh wait!
But of course, I'm sure someone will delete my post and let yours remain... birds of a feather I guess.
Ha ha
They released an adult game for a console that appeals to kids. The same would happen if they released a GTA for the Wii. The real issue is, T2 are terrible at market research.
BS
Erm, a sure fire hit would be another 3D GTA game on PS3 or 360. Maybe this just didn't sell as well because while being GTA, it wasn't the same GTA that sells bucketloads. But of course, just blame it all on piracy. That can be the only possible cause of bad sales.. *rolls eyes*
true
Agrees with above poster...
true but
you could say it wasn't the same gta that sells bucketloads but if you are like a lot of people you could actually say this is the best effort to be rolled out for a GTA title since Vice City on the PS2. The game was brilliant and got rave reviews. Its not sold greatly due to piracy and the demographic of DS owners primarily being young children.
He's right and wrong
I download games from torrents to see if I like them since now most games don't have demos like they used to, and since most games are on console as well. The demos come out later (sometimes) so they can take your money up front sight unseen.
I'm glad I downloaded this game because I played it for 3 minutes and tried to pretend I never saw it. It's an adult game but set in a very kiddy GTA/GTA2 style. It's very meh. That's why I do it. I'm not gonna get screwed out of $30-50 for a PSP game then sell it back to GameStop the next day for $19 bucks if I'm lucky.
I agree with him though, that a lot more people probably would have purchased it (and sold it cuz it suuuucks) if it were not for those that don't support the companies, and steal.
After what we have seen GTA do...no one wants to go back to what it was in the 90s with a 21st century touch-up.
Bound to fail
This game had managed to miss every demographic it was aiming at. Sure it had scored high in reviews, but it was not going to attract anyone the way it was made. The Nintendo DS had mainly mild games, so anyone who only plays on it would have no idea what GTA is. The Playstation Portable is very advanced compared to the Nindendo DS, yet the only changes made to the port was a slight tweeking of the visuals and audio, the gameplay untouched. Those who play on the Playstation Portable expect every aspect of a game to push the machine to it's limits, and this, because of the fact that it is a port from a machine that has it's visuals and audio as weakpoints, pleasing is the last thing this game would do.
In my opinion, I think that the developers should be happy someone even bothered to pirate it. Taking GTA to it's roots was a bold move, but it didn't work out the way the developers hoped for.
PSP version died due to IPhone pricing
"The game has flourished on direct download channels. It recently launched on iPhone and iPod Touch and became the top grossing game on the App Store. And a version for Apple’s iPad – which launches this month – seems a given."
RRP:...
DS Game Price: 29.99
PSP Game Price: 29.99
IPhone Game Price: 5.99!
Companies which release a game on another more popular system at a MUCH cheaper price with the same features = Always a winner, and a loser.
death of piracy will be the death of software
I'm amazed at how quickly pirating is at fault...What these softy companies should realise is that their product/s would not have been known if it wasn't for piracy.
The death of piracy via the new incoming laws will make the majority of these moaning software companies disappear.
No one will buy products they aren't sure of or havent heard of...
Call of Duty and other titles amongst the gaming fraternities were some of the most pirated games and their success regulalry outstrip hollywood productions.
The same applies to the music and film industries.
I welcome the dissolution of all these media carp and I wish them a speedy self destruct. Press the red button now.
Our children minds will be liberated from Bollox!
Piracy is now a marketing tool???
Really Jake? Are you serious?
Two things:
1) I don't need to illegally download something to be aware of it as a product
2) In reality how many times has a pirate actually thought they liked it so they go and buy it? I bet as a percentage it's miniscule. As for good word of mouth, somebody espousing the virtue of a game, I don't see that happening either. You're just as likely to tell them how easy it is to get for free as you are to say something positive.
Excuses like this are bullshit plain and simple. Stop pirating stuff and actually pay for something for once in your life. This is theft plain and simple.
On the actual topic, I was happy to pay full whack on day one for it. Thought it was a quality experience.
lololol
@ "The Big Cheese"
How long have you been at Take-Two?
lol
stve
I bought this game and played it for about 5 minutes before i realized it sucked. word of mouth is reason it did not sell well, it was nothing like the best selling games on the ps3
Rubbish
"Thought it was a quality experience" what a load of old cock.
Try before your buy !!!!
Loved
Loved the game BECAUSE I didn't pay. In fact, if I had paid for it, I would have been very disappointed - 6 hours of play time and I was DONE. Very little replay value.
Start charging less and people will buy instead of "steal".
