Miyamoto: 'My best is yet to come'

Nintendo general manager wants Wii 2 to be “unique” and hints at new Starfox

World-renowned games designer Shigeru Miyamoto has said his best work is yet to come, and the challenge of building the next line of consoles comes down to how unique Nintendo can make theirs.

In an interview with GamesTM he said: “In the past five years I’ve been working on such unusual titles like Wii Fit Plus and Wii Sports Resort.

“Ten years ago I could never have been able to imagine that I would be making games like that. That’s why I can say that the best is yet to come to me.”

GamesTM also quizzed the Nintendo legend on a HD Wii console.

“Technology is always evolving and Nintendo, just like other companies, is going to integrate those technologies into our new products as they develop,” Miyamoto added.

“Whether that be a Wii HD, Wii 2 or an entirely new console, I am not in a position to say at the moment.

“I think that in the next generation of hardware, the challenge is how unique and different a product Nintendo is able to make.”

When GamesTM told Miyamoto that they’d love to see a new Starfox game for Wii, he replied: “Me too.”

He also previously said to Japanese games magazine Famitsu that the Wiimote could be used to control the Arwing in Starfox.

Miyamoto picked up a lifetime achievement award at the video game BAFTAs last month. He created many of Nintendo’s original franchises, including Mario and Zelda.

GamesTM recently launched a new website.

That statement more or less confirms that the next console will have HD graphics. It does to me anyway. Anyone else think that?

@JDE:

Perhaps, but I suspect he is talking about something new and novel that will appeal to people in general, unlike HD "graphics". HD actually justs refers to screen resolutions and it will probably just be included as an afterthought because it is cheap enough. Remember that the success of the Wii came partly from applying technology from a new area, not just graphics. When he says technology he is probably not thinking about graphics. If Nintendo thought like that they wouldn't have made the Wii.

While the Wii is a fairly sucsesfull console i dont think the new casual format is the reasons for it, the Wii 2 may just turn out to be another fad, one of the major reasons for the sucsess of the Wii is that the majority of the components are recycled Gamecube components, while microsoft and sony spent billions developing new tech nintendo just used what they had avalibull then added a few new features, unlike microsoft and sony nintendo dont take losses on there console sales.

I baught a Wii because it was aparently the only current gen console i could afford, but from a technical standpoint it uses last gen tech with the new motion controls, the new control system could of simply been an addon to the gamecube and work just as well. Nintendo while being the more popular console is the least popular choice for hardcore gamers because most of the games on the console are aimed at the casual audence, the few exceptions are simply sequals to titles that were already well established, Mario and sonic being good examples.

Updating an existing console to support a higher resolition is one thing but doing so and then saying its a new console is another it would need somthing other than the new "HD" support to keep it afloat. However i hope Nintendo uses the new console to focus on both the casual and hardcore audences as i hope technlogicly it will will rival the the xbox and playstation. but i fear casual gaming is going to replace the mainstream games witch i used to love on nintendos platforms.

Its not last gen spec the GPU in wii is ATI HD 2400/2600 it came out in early 2006 and is capable of GPGPU so there the Hollywood is capable of proccessing 250x faster so no need for Powerful CPU as can share it amongst CPU/GPU plus its always been the way to offer more power to devs as years go by through new SDK's ect so a new SDK 2.2 will be shown with Zelda/Pikimin3 being 2 of the first games to make use of extra power.

Console makers never offer full power to devs at the start so expect the new SDK 2.2 to offer maybe 576p/720p ect more GPU/CPU power ect its a FACT this will happen nintendo saves power for Zelda games then 3rd partys get the same,Remember the statement Zelda uses 100% power of wii but the current power of wii cant handle the game,See how it says the current meaning more power to come for more realistic games ect.
