Xbox 3 and PS4 in ‘2-3 years’

Capcom’s David Reeves reckons new hardware could be here sooner than most people think

We keep being told that we’re only half way through the current hardware lifecycle – that would indicate a 2015/2016 launch for the next versions of the Xbox and PlayStation. But Capcom’s European COO David Reeves thinks the industry could be in for a surprise.

“Two to three years, I reckon,” the exec told GamesIndustry when asked about his expected launch date for new hardware.

“I don't have any inside information. All the first-parties have got to be working on something. The tricky thing is when do you put a stake in the ground on technology?

“That's the problem. You can be waiting a few extra months to implement something, but you've got to set a date to go with a certain chip at a certain point otherwise you're going to miss the key milestones.”

In addition, the exec – who was once the brains behind Sony’s European PlayStation assault – confirmed that Capcom has every intention of releasing games for both the Xbox Kinect and PlayStation Move, as well as a number of 3D-compatible titles.

“Capcom is embracing it, we're working with Microsoft and with Sony on both sides and trying to match up the IPs we have with what the first-parties want,” he stated.

“It's not a forced fit. In some ways it's quite a natural way of progressing. Capcom is definitely going to embrace it and just as the first-parties are doing, we see it as another blip before we come into the next cycle. 3D gaming is the same. Anything they can add to revive and pique interest in the games until we have another clash of the titans in two years time.”

More like Wii in 2-3 Years

The PS3 and 360 have longer then that now they've released new hardware for the consoles. It'll infact be the Wii to first break the next gen barrier, initially surpassing their rivals with tech... only for Sony and MS to eventually copy them, as always.

I don't think so. The clear and sensible approach would be for MS and Sony to remove physical media altogether and I believe that is where they are looking to head with the next generation of consoles. Until they're ready to do that then don't expect a new console from either party quite so soon.

it'll be 5 years before there is a digital only console that works and is like a 360 / ps3 (not including onlive) a friend installed wow the otherday installed the discs 1st took awhile and then 8 hours of patches (wow is a big game, but still shows on an average BB connection the length to get a game is still too long) and there is still too much money invested in bluray and dvd media for them to develope another system, it'll have to be a rival company AMSTRAD, they do really well because their systems will be just as reliable as an xbox360 so no one will really complain about it braking down. Or Virgin consoles. Add what company you think will start to make consoles lol or maybe it'll shift back to pc gaming once a console starts acting like a pc why not just use a PC?

Joe: That would be an incredibly stupid decision for so many reasons. Mainly the fact that to do so, would mean the end of all retail outlets for games, which isn't going to happen.

There is also the fact that people with "real" friends, like to take games round to their friend's house to play.

That's without even considering bandwidth limitations, connection speeds, storage medium failures, finite availability of games etc... I know many people like myself who will simply quit gaming come the introduction of total digital distribution. The same will apply if they ever decide to use the same level of stupidity with music and films too.

Entertainment is a luxury, not a neccessity... turn entertainment into a dictatorship, and people will lose interest very quickly.
