Honours shared evenly amongst media rivals as recently closed mag achieves Legendary status

PC Zone heads roll call of winners at Games Media Awards

Imagine, Eurogamer, IGN, Future and The Guardian were all part of an eclectic roll call of winners at last night’s Games Media Awards.

In front of a packed audience at London’s Bloomsbury Ballroom, the event ended amidst emotional scenes as PC Zone, the magazine that recently closed after 17 years service, was presented with the Games Media Legend award. Members of the editorial team past and present gathered on stage to collect the honour – and a wreath spelling out RIPCZone. Oh and they were joined by a Chilean miner, obviously.

Other highlights included two wins for Jon Blyth – one for Best Writer, Print, the other in the Best Broadcast category for The Blyth Report on IGN. The website claimed another victory when Martin Robinson picked the Rising Star award.

One of the surprises of the night came when the Edge/Games TM duopoly of the Magazine category was broken by Imagine’s Retro Gamer.

Eurogamer’s stranglehold on the Games Website award couldn’t be loosened, however, as the team scored its fourth win in a row – although individual honours were scooped by CVG’s Tim Ingham, named Best Writer, Online.

The complete list of winners is as follows:

Games Media Legend – PC Zone
Games Magazine – Retro Gamer
Games Website – Eurogamer
Games Blog – Rock, Paper, Shotgun
Specialist Writer, Print – Jon Blyth
Specialist Writer, Online – Tim Ingham, CVG
Regional Games Columnist – Dave Cook, The Scotsman
Games Coverage by a National Newspaper – The Guardian
Games Coverage by a Mainstream Magazine – Shortlist
Games Broadcast or Podcast – The Blyth Report
Rising Star – Martin Robinson, IGN

The Games Media Awards are voted on by a panel of over 150 games journalists and PRs. They recognise the best in specialist, mainstream, print and digital games media.
