Over 1m Kinects sold in 10 days

Microsoft claims it has sold over 1m Kinect cameras in the 10 days since the device first launched.

According to Xbox chief Don Mattrick, the firm is still on track to sell 5m units by the end of the year.

Kinect launced in North America two weeks ago, and a week ago in the UK and Europe.

Its success here in Britain helped the UK High Street towards a headline-grabbing 113m grossing week – the higest ever (the number was mostly driven by Call of Duty Black Ops, mind).

"It’s a strong start," said Mattrick, head of Microsoft’s game unit, in an interview with MSNBC (a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC Universal.

"Consumers are loving it," he said of the device which requires no physical input and relies on gestures detected using a 3D camera.

Microsoft hopes the device will launch the Xbox platform into new audiences.

We are appreciative of the response we have seen from consumers that has culminated in sales of more than 1m units in the first 10 days on the market for Kinect for Xbox 360,” Mattrick added in the official press release.

This is a great start to the holiday season, and we will continue to work with our retailer partners to keep pace with high demand and deliver against our plan to sell more than 5m Kinect sensors worldwide by the end of this year.”

Kinect launches in Asia later this week.
