Physical games market will not recover

The market boom that enveloped the video games market in 2008 will never again be recaptured, analyst Screen Digest has warned.

A gradual eradication of RRP, the disruption of the console hardware cycle and the rise of digital means that the High Street has only decline to come, analyst Ben Keen told an LGC audience last month.

We believe the packaged games industry hit a peak back in 2008,” he explained. Unfortunately the market has declined over the last two years and this is expected to continue.

Even with the release of new platforms, we do not believe that packaged spend will return to the heights of 2008.”
