Global PS3 sales overtake Xbox 360

New stats from from two separate sources have stated that Sony’s PS3 console has now passed Microsoft’s Xbox 360 in terms of total unit sales across the globe.

Europe has always been a strong territory for Sony’s machines. Gamasutra reports that retailer GameStop – citing data from an IDG report – claims that European PS3 sales have hit 14.7m units compared to Xbox 360’s 13.7m.

In addition, Gamasutra has also reported numbers from Strategy Analytics that show PS3’s total worldwide sales now number 43.4m consoles. Xbox 360 stands at 42.9m.

The report predicts that PS3 will outsell Xbox 360 in 2011.

Of course, it’s a different story in the US where Microsoft continues to dominate and enjoys a sales lead of around 11m units over PS3.

"While the Kinect peripheral has given a boost to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 strategy, the console’s performance outside of the U.S. continues to disappoint,” says Strategy Analytics’ digital consumer practice analyst Jia Wu stated.

"Global demand for Sony’s PS3 has exceeded that of the Xbox 360 in each of the past two years, and we expect that to continue over the coming years."

Let’s not forget, of course, that Nintendo’s Wii remains very much the boss of this generation with a worldwide install base of around 75.5m units.
