Smackdown lifts THQ

The arrival of the latest title in its evergreen WWE franchise, plus a strong performance in the PS2 budget and GBA sectors, saw THQ’s market share leap last month.

The US publisher was second only to EA in both ChartTrack’s Label By Units
and Company By Units listings, claiming 11.1 per cent and 17.4 per cent
market share.

The strength of its budget offerings meant that THQ didn’t chart quite as
high in the value publishing listings, but it still claimed the number three
position (with a 7.4 per cent share) in the Label By Value league and was
fourth (7.7 per cent) in Company By Value.

THQ’s biggest release last month was WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2006. It was
rolled out on November 11th and notched up sales of around 173,000 units by
the end of the month.

But elsewhere the publisher claimed three of the top 10 PS2 budget titles
with Spongebob, Juiced and The Incredibles. And in the GBA charts, it
dominated the top 10 with eight titles, namely Simpsons: Road Rage, Bratz:
Rock Angelz, Spongebob, Scooby-Doo, Power Rangers, the Disney Princess/Lion
King pack, Disney Princess and the Scooby Doo double pack.
