The title also celebrated becoming the most played title on Xbox Live this week, dislodging the long-standing Halo 2.
The success of Gears of War propelled the UK software market to its highest value so far this year, though it should also be noted that Nintendo’s DS continues to go from strength to strength.
Four DS-only titles reside in the Top 20 this week; Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue at number 12, Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training in 14th, Nintendogs: Dalmatian & Friends at 17 and New Super Mario Bros in 20th. In fact, 15 DS titles in total are now represented in the Top 40.
Elsewhere in the charts, EA claims three of the top five positions, with Need for Speed: Carbon falling from top spot to number two, FIFA 07 climbing to fourth and The Sims 2 Pets stealing fifth. It’s the first time that EA’s football sim giant has climbed ahead of Pro Evo since Konami’s title was released.
Other new entries in the chart are Activision’s Tony Hawk’s project 8 at 18 and Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus in 28th.
