3DS sales hit 15m units

Lifetime sales of Nintendo’s 3DS have now hit 15m.

The handheld has reached that goal faster than either the DS or the Wii, but has still clearly lagged behind Nintendo’s own expectations, with the company lowering all of its full-year forecasts.

Total 3DS software sales hit 28.04m units.

As for DS, that sold 4.64m units for the nine months ending December 31st, with software sales reaching 51.2m units. Wii hardware sales in the period hit 8.96m with software unit sales of 89.06m.

Speculation that this could mean a recousing on Nintendo’s core gaming audience, however, have been dashed with an assurance from the company that it continues to pursue its basic strategy of ‘Gaming Population Expansion’ by offering compelling products that anyone can enjoy, regardless of age, gender or gaming experience”.
