Ubisoft has revealed that the beta for its new online shooter IP The Division was played by a record-breaking 6.4 million gamers.
It is the biggest beta for a new IP on ‘current generation platforms’. That’s PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to you and me.
In doing so it beats previous record holder, Destiny. That game’s beta was played by 4.6 million players. And whereas that title was available on PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360, The Division’s beta was only available on new machines.
But both of these pale in comparison to the figures that EA’s Star Wars Battlefront beta brought in – that was played by nine million gamers, but of course isn't a new IP.
Ubisoft also revealed that players spent an average time of four hours and 52 minutes with the game, and over a third of that time was spent in the Dark Zone. 2.5 million consumers spent time in this PvP area.
“We want to thank the millions of people who joined in on The Division’s Open Beta,” creative director Magnus Jansen said.
“We hope everybody enjoyed playing, and we think the beta is going to help ensure a great launch for the game. We’re looking forward to everyone getting their hands on the full game when The Division is released on March 8th.”
