An average of 60 Flappy Bird clones are uploaded onto the iTunes App Store every day, according to a new report.
Pocket Gamer delves into the ongoing craze started by Dong Nguyen’s creation Flappy Bird, and the effects it’s had on the mobile market. After rocketing up Apple’s charts and absorbing a storm of online abuse, Nguyen pulled the title down from both the App Store and Google Play nearly a month ago.
That wasn’t the end of the craze, however, as copycat developers have (pardon the expression) sent in the clones. Around 60 a day, in fact – and that’s from data collected this month.
The site’s research showed that nearly 250 games resembling” Flappy Bird were released between February 28th and March 3rd. That’s more than one new Flappy Bird clone every half hour.
It’s not difficult to imagine why this is happening. While the original is dead, the fad lingers on. Those that make their living cloning products do so by going to where the action is. It may on the surface appear to be beating a dead horse, but clearly there is still a high demand among consumers for this thing.
