Amazon to launch console this year – report

A games-focused under-the-TV entertainment system will be launched by Amazon in 2014, a new report has claimed.

VG247 claims to have word from multiple sources” that a $300 machine will be launched this year that offers the streaming and download of games, music, movies and TV content”.

It will run the Android operating system, meaning it will have arguably more in common with tablets and the likes of Ouya and Gamestick than Xbox One, PS4 or Wii U.

It’s apparently being designed by Lab 216, which is behind Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet range.

The site claims that a launch was initially planned for last year before what is described as a last minute delay”.

Meetings with publisher bosses have apparently already taken place and Amazon is allegedly recruiting for its games development team with many positions requiring extensive knowledge in triple-A games across production, art, tech and design roles”.

Talk of an Amazon console has been doing the rounds for several months now.
