AMD confirms new ‘Volcanic Island’ GPUs for 2013 launch

The long-awaited Radeon 8000 series will be released this year, AMD has confirmed.

It has also revealed the name the graphics card architecture will be known by – ‘Volcanic Islands’.

The Sea Islands codename encompasses the PS4 chip, as well as the new mobile chips announced at CES, and the Bonaire GPU found in the Radeon HD 7790,” said AMD’s CPU architect Jim Keller and business transformation officer Checkib Akroutm, as reported by Tom’s Hardware.

I bring this up because it shows the people inside AMD continue to work hard, long hours to deliver great products amongst the turmoil shown in the press.

The next generation of graphics cards – Volcanic Islands – is coming this year and shaping up nicely.”

Rival Nvidia is expected to launch the first of its GeForce 700 series GPUs later this month.
