Android app downloads overtake iOS

Sales of Android hardware have been ahead of Apple for some time now, but for the first time Android downloads have now overtaken iOS.

App Annie‘s report, as spotted by The Guardian, covers Q2 2013.

It’s important to note that despite this, Apple’s iOS App Store still generated 2.3x the revenue of its Android rival, despite Android’s ten per cent raw download volume advantage.

Games continue to claim the lion’s share of both markets – 80 per cent on Google Play and 75 per cent on iOS.

The UK came fourth in the iOS download volume global league table, down one place from Q1 2013 sitting behind the US, China and Japan. In revenue terms the UK is third behind the US and Japan.

The UK fails to feature in the top five Android downloaders table (which is populated by the US, South Korea, India, Russia and Brazil) although does feature at No.5 in the revenue league behind Japan, South Korea, the US and Germany.
