Anime sensation Youkai Watch holds Final Fantasy XIV from No.1 in Japan

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIV debuted at No.2 in this week’s Japanese chart, the latest Famitsu data reveals.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn sold over 39,000 units, but fell short of 3DS exclusive Youkai Watch, which topped the chart with 49,000 sales.

Published by Professor Layton maker LevelFive, Youkai Watch launched in Japan in July 2013. But the popularity of the Youkai Watch anime TV show has fuelledresurgent sales. Having sold 28,000 units last week, sales of the title this week almost doubled to over 49,000.

Both Bandai Namco and Nintendo continued their successful runs in the Japanese chart as the two publishers accounted for six of the Top Ten best-selling games. And it was a strong debut for Capcom’s Ace Attorney 123: Phoenix Wright Selection, which debuted at No.3.

The PS Vita defended its crown as the best-selling console in Japan this week as it sold over 17,000 units. It snuck past the 3DS LL’s 16,703 units, which forced Nintendo’s handheld into the No.2 spot for a second consecutive week.

However, if sales of the 3DS LL and vanilla 3DS are combined, Nintendo’s handheld remains the top-selling console in the country. Elsewhere, the PS4 placed third in the hardware chart and well ahead of the fourth place PS3.
