Apple confirms iPhone 5 battery fault

A very small percentage” of iPhone 5s have a battery fault that causes power to drain too fast, Apple has admitted.

Free replacements are being offered to any owners affected – they can be identified here via their serial number.

Those hoping for a replacement must have a handset that is still in working order and without a cracked screen.

Apple has determined that a very small percentage of iPhone 5 devices may suddenly experience shorter battery life or need to be charged more frequently,” the company said. The affected iPhone 5 devices were sold between September 2012 and January 2013 and fall within a limited serial number range.

If your iPhone 5 is experiencing these symptoms and meets the eligibility requirements noted below, Apple will replace your iPhone 5 battery, free of charge.”

UK customers can begin claiming their replacements from August 29th.

Apple has previously admitted to a fault with the iPhone 5’s sleep/wake button, offering customers a free repair or replacement.
