Warner Interactive’s action sequel Batman: Arkham City and Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim were the two highest rated console titles of 2011 according to reviews aggregation site Metacritic.
Both won an average review score of 96. Also scoring 96 was indie hit World of Goo.
This makes the trio the joint third highest scoring games ever behind the likes of Super Mario galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and Grand Theft Auto III.
It’s also the same score gained by cult classics such as Half-Life 2, BioShock, The Orange Box, Mass Effect 2, Resident Evil 4 and Metal Gear Solid 2.
Hot on their heels in second place in 2011 was Valve’s Portal 2 (95 per cent) followed by a host of games on 94 per cent – The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Anomaly Warzone Earth, Mass Effect 2 (on PS3), Minecraft, iBlast Moki 2 HD, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Sonic CD, Contre Jour HD, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and Rayman Origins.
But what about the lowest scoring games of 2011?
With a quite bewildering score of just 16 per cent, WiiWare title 101-in1 Explosive Megamix, developed by Nordcurrent, was the most lamented game of the year.
Other titles to be similarly shamed included Ubisoft’s Kinect outing Self-Defense Training Camp (21 per cent), Team 6 racer Flatout 3 (25 per cent), DS action ‘hit’ Duke Nukem: Critical Mass (29 per cent), PC title Postal III (32 per cent), the Wii version of X-Men: Destiny (36 per cent).
