Capcom to Plunder digital downloads

Publisher Capcom plans to increase its focus on the digital download market with the launch of new IP Plunder.

The firm’s digital output began in 2006 with the release of Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting, and it released Rocketman: Axis of Evil only last week. However Capcom’s senior European marketing director Michael Pattison insists that this is only the beginning.

Our current line-up represents the beginnings of a much larger Capcom Digital initiative focused around innovation, creativity and community development,” said Pattison. The coming months will see a combination of classic Capcom IP, licensed IP and the development of new original IP, working with some of the best developers in the business.”

Plunder is a part of Capcom’s new initiative. It is a pirate-themed strategy game by ex-Halo veterans Certain Affinity, coming to PS3, PC and 360 this summer. The game places an emphasis on team-based ship combat, and Capcom feels such original IP would not be possible as a boxed product.

We’re just excited that this medium offers more opportunities to develop great games that might not have otherwise been viable via the retail channel,” added Pattison. We want to be a leading player in the download sector as it grows, and with our current plans we look set to achieve this goal.”

Capcom is also preparing to release Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix and Bionic Commando Rearmed in the coming year.
