Cars overtake GTA

So this week THQ celebrates its first number one of 2006, after the Cars movie release in cinemas and the consequent games sales boost, beating pretty formidable opposition in the form of Rockstar’s mega-franchise. Meanwhile Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros claims its third week at number three, and Ubisoft’s Pirates of the Caribbean title racks up its second week in fourth.

Nintendo’s Brain Training looks set for a long run in the top ten, moving up one spot to fifth, while BVG’s take on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise drops one to number six. Top ten ever-present, Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer 5, climbs one to seventh spot, while fellow chart stalwart The Sims 2 is up to number eight after its release on Platinum, in its 90th week on the charts.

The between-season limbo football fans are suffering through has maintained the appetite for footie of a digital kind as EA’s World Cup 2006 title remains at nine, while Activision’s movie tie-in Over the Hedge holds on to tenth spot for a second week.
